    Straight and Spiral Bolt Fluting

Here are a couple of pics of our Remington and Tikka T3 bolt fluting options. There is also an option of a second safety bolt lock hole, that once we've installed a positive half cock, allows you to lock the bolt in the half cock position so it can't get knocked open or more importantly closed if you fall. All work is done right here by Ian, Norm and myself in Ian's machine shop, in the rifle assembly and load room, and on our comprehensive range facilities. When I get time, I'll post up more pics of our rifle builds and other services.

For any more info, prices etc, contact me at editor@nzhunter.co.nz
Please do not PM me, as I never remember to check them, but I will answer all emails, I promise!

Would you recommend this for a bush rifle Greg or would it just cause even more"bush dust" twigs and crap to get in action?

We do this to all our bush guns and haven't noticed any more rubbish in the action. It can't get into the chamber anyway. I personally think this is a non issue!

Hi Greg, I read your article in your Mag about what you did to the T3. I have 2 T3's (and working on getting a 3rd and I was wondering how what it cost to spiral flute the bolt and drill the extra hole for the safety? Also do you need to have the whole rifle, or can I just send you the bolt?

    Sniper,
Its $120 plus gst for the bolt fluting, and $50 plus gst for the half cock and safety bolt lock hole. We only do the hole as part of a half cock fitting, as the hole has to be in the half cock position. And yes, we really need the rifle to get the half cock position and therefore the hole in the right place. We can flute the bolt without the rifle though of course!

The safety bolt lock hole is that a spring loaded ball bearing detent type setup? I have a rem bolt with a maisey-style half cock that works fine but is easy to knock out of half cock into the bolt open position giving an annoying loud "click" noise could this be remedied with this hole set up?

    Gidday YIM8,
No, it can't be fitted to a Remington as they have no bolt lock in the first place, unless its a very old 721 or 700. Its Tikka specific I'm afraid!

Second that question - I have a kimber that could use the treatment.

Oops, hadn't seen these queries - sorry! We've done Sako's before, and a Howa would be fine. A Kimber with the non rotating Mauser style extractor would be a pain, as you'd have to stop the flutes short of the extractor retaining circular clip. We will have a look at one when we have a minute - snowed under at the moment!
    Thanks,
    Greg
