    12g press question

Have been looking around for a 12g press as I wanna shoot more and spend less. Seen this auction on trademe for a mec sizemaster press . Would this press do all I need to get started? Other than shells, wads , primers , shot, powder. mec 12g press | Trade Me

    Much appreciated
    Josh

It probably would at a glance.
But depending on what you want to do, factory loads may be enough and be cost effective

I think i would just buy everything new ( wads shells primers ect) and make normal loads. I dont know shite about reloading so just need something to start me off.

I only use mine to load slugs.
I don't do duck shooting so do use steel.
Trap rounds work out about the same price as reloading.
Powder is about $65 a pound.
Shot is about $75 for 10 kg
    Primers are $65 a 1000
Wads are about $25 for 500
Plus cases. I have some winchester cases you can have for postage if you want any to help you get started.

I can give you a handful of those slugs to play with, if you want.

Cheers spook. Im assuming you mean the slugs to load myself? Do they just load with a normal press?

    Possummatti

You could buy a new Lee Load All for the price of that MEC.
    https://secure.zeald.com/reloaderssu...q=lee+load+all

I got one second hand off of trade me for $80 with primers/powder/wads/cases and about 20kgs of shot.

The load all makes a good job of reloading 12ga ammo however unlike reloading rifle or pistol ammo the cost of the components new for 12ga is more than the cost of new 12ga ammo.
Reloading steel shot is also a bit more difficult than reloading lead shot.

If you can find cheap unwanted second hand components then it makes sense.

    Cheers
    Pete

    Thanks P38
Didn't realise you could get loaders that cheap. Found a cool little tool on the web, worked out it will take 780 rounds to pay off the loader. Doesnt really work out economical does it.
    Cheers Josh

I believe the old red ones are what you are talking about - 1 piece comp formed.
The newer grey ones are 2 piece and comp formed and can be loaded with same brew.
I have 5-10k of the grey ones. They are pretty good, but don't seem to last quite as long as the red ones

The reason there are so many shotgun presses for sale is that it is no longer cheaper to reload shot gun shells expect for special loadings like slugs, even the cowboy action types buy factory,
the MEC is a good brand much better than the Lee, but people should be giving them way I did with mine, if you find a good one offer to give it a home.

I have found a cheap source of lead so it makes it worthwhile for me to reload as I use #5 and #6 for 3 gun, and since these loads pretty much are only available as hunting loads and not trap loads the price heads up, no $90 slabs of those babies lol they start round the $130 mark and head for the sky. I agree about giving one a home if offered, I had my single stage MEC given to me and I use it for load #6 and slugs and I really find it relaxing loading shotgun more so than loading for rifle etc.
