    150 vs 165/168 in 308

Have a 165 (speer btsp)and 168 (eldm)load that both shoot well and near enough same speed. Poi has the 165s sitting an inch below the 168s but both pills are getting too hard to find or no longer come into NZ(i believe). I also shoot factory corelokts but they shoot 2.5-3" lower than my main loads. Would reloading 150s at a higher speed bring them up to the same POI as the other two or not that simple?

Unlikely but possible, a very few rifles will print a variety of loads at the same POI (usually at fairly close range like 100) but remember thats not so overfull if they have different trajectories because at any extended range (250M Plus) they will be miles apart . . . . not worth bothering with in my opinion.

I'm with Tentman, never quite seems to work out for me that type of thing...

Ok not sounding promising. May just shoot my factory ammo then re zero with my main loads. Won't bother trying to find corelokts. Any cheap 165 suggestions?

I use Bryns Targex 165's, they shoot amazing (1/3 MOA in my rifle), they are supposed to be OK for game but I only shoot paper and gongs with them.

Nnothing wrong with the 150/ 165 SGK's. You can get 2750-2850 out of 150's.

And while I remember - I follow Mule Deer's (the writer John Barsness) 308 load philosophy - take a 150 to 165 gn projectile, stick 46.0 gns AR2208/Varget and go shoot it, 99% of the time its a winner. I haven't bothered working up a 308 load for years using this approach (if going straight to 165's it does pay to try a 45.0 then 45.5 first to ensure you're not hitting pressure). I get 2740 fps with Targex 165's in my 22" 308 with superb accuracy as mentioned, its a warmish load.

Seems a pretty fair approach @Tentman. I reckon we all over think it.

Any standard 150 to 165 gr bullet intended for hunting will be fine.

Yeah how similar do they shoot to the eldms? I am aware they are almost identical bullets

Hi, seems like the right thread to ask..
I use 308 in 150gr 1:10 twist shooting out to 400mtr no problem, but am thinking of moving up to 165/168 gr , will the heavier weight pill give me more legs and tighter grouping as I'm hunting more tops ?

    Try 178 grain eld-x @2600fps.

    Greetings Superdriver,
I played with getting different projectiles to shoot to the same POI in the .308 in the 1980's but found it almost impossible to achieve. By fiddling with the velocity I could get the 165 and 150 grains to shoot to the same elevation at 100 but the 150 grains shot left. Recently I ran some tests with 125, 150 and 165 grains and different powders that produced similar results. Longer range would just make things worse. My 6.5x55 and .223 rifles tend to shoot different projectiles close together. These days with better scope adjustments different loads shooting to different POI is less of a problem.
    Regards Grandpamac.
