    20 inch 30-06

anyone lopped their 06 to 20 incher?

mine is currently or has been done , looking to use those 130 ppsn woodleighs , is it wise to use similiar components to the 22 inch tube data, or should i go a faster (2206h) with the shorter tube?

wise to go lighter with the 130s over the 150-180 options?

    open to suggestions please

    cheers

No I havent but love the idea.

I'm not knowledgeable enough on the reloading to no about the faster powder for the shorter barrel in 3006 but I do no in short .308s 2206h is used in some cases over 2208 for abit more speed so you could be spot on their.

The woodleighs are a full copper right? If so I'd say your spot on with the 130s aswell hard and fast from all iv read and light for calibre I'd imagen the 180 woodleighs are for big magnums . Love to here how you get on with it all always loved the 06 cartridge makes so much sence

20inch is not that short and your same brew will work fine

30-06 is a great classic - if I still had mine and chopped to 20inch I’d run 165 SSTs and use Reloader 16.

@Brian has had one for years. Very effective.

Back in circa 1963 Husqvarna produced their lightweight model in a 20" 30-06 - lovely rifle.

As most are 22 inches to start with two inches isn't going to make a hell of a difference. 2206h can be used for all loads up to 180 gr or so but beyond 150 gr there are better options.
My advice is just use the standard load data or you will confuse yourself by trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

    Copy that Gents.
    Thanks.

i have a few flavours already loaded in that case, 130-150-180 so see how it goes with those before changing anything

I’m a 2209 fan in my 06’s, but you will see the old classic target load is a 167 gn pill on imr 4064 I think. Certainly one quicker than 09. So you could use 08 or 06h if you wanted.

    here it is finally-
20 inch 30-06 modded a bit aswell- new rings to be fitted an possible scope swap
been developing up the 130 PPSN loads and 2208- of the previous loads it only liked the 180gr ppsn charge, but at X10 left i pulled and re charged a bunch of 130grs-

interesting...I was under impression from your posts that you mainly hunt in bush country where ranges were sub hundred yards.....the winchester bog std 180grn power point load is awesome in .308 for that so should be just as awesome in 30-06 .MOST people drop down to 130s for little deer like fallow or goats or for a youth loading, but for no other reason, the lighter projectiles dont do anything the heavies cant do better...except expand and cause more damage quicker at expense of penertration.

Drill holes in your rather heavy rifle and flute it to make it lighter, but leave the horrible heavy steel loopy rings and bases on?

the Woodleigh bullet is world wide known to be a top performer , the bonus of tight tolerances is the bonding of the jacket and core- never ever seen one woodleigh rip apart and spruke them myself as a accubond type performer in close-

he 130gr ppsn choice will give a boost in velocity and in my experiences punches above its weight (as do all woodleighs) and id say its on par with 165gr cup and core "sp" projectile with the bonus it will most definatly stick together.

with the 22 inch barrel an similiar load ive only shot sambar hinds and its been caught once after angling away and into the chest, exiting the hide, entering an breaking the front leg bone an caught on the far hide of the leg- 50-60m impact so expansion was more than typical ranges 80-180 say-

with the velocity "loss" of say 100fps on average- its not here nor there but is starting to act like a 308 with 180gr......
ideally this gun is a north east victorian scrub gun an its max will be 300m with a backline hold-

ive tossed up wit hthe 150gr PPSN from Woodleigh but pulled them an settled on the 2208/130gr load - fallow are quite often on the cards with this gun.

the Woodleigh certainly is not a Speer cup an core 125-130gr - its more adequatley built for the sambar say- im not super confident on all shots for stags buy having shot them for years now with 270 and SP 130gr and the 7-08 with the 140 woodleigh , within there lies this combo and thats a winner :

hey just a follow up on this.

only the 180gr ppsn load was acceptable.
130 ppsn re developed an was .5gr lesser
150 ppsn load was not good enough for hunting so mid way through developing that up an givin up in favour of the 130s shootin so well now

The 130gn would help with recoil, I'm guessing she's pretty "loud & barkie" at 20in. Another option for light pill with plenty of punch would be Barnes TTSX - 130gn or 150 gn.
