You need a 1:10" twist and a long barrel to be worthwhile. A 1:10" twist will definitely stabilise them, a 1:12" definitely won't, but they'll still be slow as in a short barrel and that's part of the problem.
I tried a sample pack in a 20" Sako 1:11", it didn't like them. Technically, a 1:11" twist should stabilise them, and I don't remember them keyholing, it just shot like shite. You can't really get them going fast enough in a .308 carbine. It's basically a 24" .300 Win Mag bullet.
As with any of the cartridges / calibres, once you get to the extreme end of the weight & length : calibre relationship, you tend to run into problems more often than not.
I remember reading quite a bit about this and finding some fellas in the US who had succeeded with the 200gr ELD-X but pretty sure they were semi-custom .308s.
Chers im loading some for a mates win mag soon and was thinking of trying it out in another friends 308 unsure of twist is a savage axis budget job might try something a little lighter , what is a practical heavy 308 projectile?
168gr ELD should do the trick.
180gr is normally considered heavy.
You might consider a 150 or 165/168gr bonded bullet? This way you have all the pentration you need with the advantages of the lighter bullet?
I find 165/168 to be the sweet spot in 308. If I had a full length barrel then maybe 178/180
I know a few that were running the 208 amax in short 308s, slow as but smashed the redskins
for bush ranges...180grn round nose hornady...job done.
The 180grn Norma Oryx also a good bullet and very accurate in my 20" .308.
Im running 178gr eldx thru a 1/10 twist Shilen barrel.
Groups really good, havent tried anything heavier.
Not a 308 but I have have some very good results with 200gr ELDX with Superformance powder in a 30-06.
Check out Stan Leenders videos on YouTube. He shoots the 212eldx from a short barrel 308 with good results. I'm planning on experimenting with these or the 208 amax
Attachment 121299 220gr sierra roundhouse in a 308
used to run the 208amax in my 10 twist 308 at i think 2450fps, it was an absolute hammer haha.
I shoot 168 eldm now though.
They work fine in a 3006, perfect for big angry scrub bulls
Far out, that was educational. The performance of the ELD-X at 1600fps is impressive.
The 10" twist looks like its a deal breaker. What rifle do you have @Rated M for Magnum?
That's what I thought haha.
Mine is a 10 twist howa, the mag box will be the limiting factor but I received some semi instructional photos on how to lengthen it from another member of the forum @Flyblown
I'm currently looking to pick up a Bergara BA-13 16.5 inch 308. 1 in 8 twist, single shot so no mag length issues. Could be fun to play with heavy bullets, though my initial thoughts are slow loads using 30-30 projectiles.
if you are going to go slow or subsonic...you may as well go cast...SHOOTERSNZ makes awesome 151grn hps and the 200grn ones seem to be pretty good to,havent played much with them yet but at 2100fps (by book) they are hitting target pointy end first close to where I was aiming.
I already load Roberts 151s in 308 and 30-30, subsonic and faster low-speed loads, haven't used them in anger yet. Playing with the 308 today the subs shot a very good group at 100m, but 14 inches below the point of aim (rifle is zeroed for 178 eld-x at 200m). Subs were only 2.5 inches low at 50m, but that was with the magnetospeed on, which has a large effect on POI.
yip sounds about right......they are good pills.put them in right place and they work well.
