Thread: 22-250 loads

Hi Guys looking to make up a load suitable for deer 22-250 1:14 twist iv been told I should be able to use 60grn projectiles but failing that il use 55 , any suggestion on what projectiles/powder would be suitable ? I haven't used a 22-250 before seemly they are quite explosive , iv just brought a couple of boxes of Winchester super x 55grn reading the box they mite not be that suitable but at least il have some brass. A friend has one that gets fed sierra 55gr spire point boat tails and regularly shoots red deer out to 300 yards with them.
In a thread somewhere thar said that the 52 gr spbt was a favourite of the deer cullers and that would have been in a 222.
In my cartridge collection along with some cac nzfs ammo in the ever popular 270, ive a couple of norma and sako 222 that I got from those guys as well.

I have been told by Nick Harvey and a well renowned Kiwi professional hunter that these bullets will stabilize in a 1:14 and 1:12 very well and do the job.

I have had success with Nosler Solid Base 64gr and Barnes 55gr TTSX.

I used 40 grns of W760 with 55 grn Sierras. That's a warm load though.
Nowadays I would use the BanesTTSX. 50 or 55 grn, depending if the 55 grn will stabilise.

Sierra 63 grain smp stabilise in my 1:12 .223, Got 5 shots into an inch. They are a flat base with a stumpy point so the bullet length is short. Have not used them on any game yet so cannot comment on performance. Given the extra speed they would probably go well in the 22-250

I'm using 55grn sierra blitzkings over 35 grns 2206h in my 788.
They skin and quarter bunnys very effectively. I have not used them on deer, but would think they would work well enough.

I have had good results with the 55 gr Noslar Ballistic Tip with 36 grs of AR 2208 these went through the chronograph at just on 3600 fps. Only shot one red but that load has taken a lot of fallow deer and goats. Don't use it much now but it is nice to have one for when you need it. The missis used it to take her first two fallow bucks, one was at about 70 yards and she hit it fair in the brisket as it was facing us and it spun round and dropped in a gully about 30 yards from the spot it was hit.
I found the jacket of that Ballistic Tip in the gut bag, the heart and lungs were mashed up a bit. The lead had parted company but it had done the job. Most of the deer we shot with that load were under 200 yards so they may perform better further out when they slow down a bit. Dynamite on goats and rabbits. My rifle is a Rem 700 SPS and it shoots pretty good for a budget rifle, usually around the inch mark ...good enough for a hunting load.

Pretty sure I was running 35g of H4895 (need to check) pushing Sierra 55g SBT's, devastating little combo...

36.5 g of varget also running 55 gr boat tails. Excellent out to 250m at a stretch.

I would go 50grn ttsx as they work great in my .223 and the extra speed you will be getting will only make them better...last I read Alex Gale was using 40-45?? grn mono jobbies in his .22-250 for all his deer bar the roar when the dirty o6 got the nod.
plenty of pills will group ok but most will be super explosive at shorter range given the speed you will be getting so its either go stout pill or head/high neck/fair in the crease with soft one and have to pass up animal if conditions not so flash.

Ive had a couple 22-250's, I kinda miss not having one, but the 6 mm's are much more versatile,
If I was likely to be shooting deer, the first bullet to try, would have to be the 60gr Partition.
others are the 63 and 65 Sierria, the 70gr Speer is said to stabilize in sum 1-14 twists.
For small game i, like the 55 gr B-tip, shot very well in both my rifles.

Sierra Blitz kings are a varmint projectile. Designed to explode little critters like rabbits and squirrels. They are not for shooting deer sized animals. Sure you will kill a few, but you will most likely send a lot off with surface wounds because the projectile will not penetrate to the vitals.

@Boaraxa,i have some 70 gr speer's, 63 gr sierra's and 60gr hornady soft points if you want to try them. pm me and we will work some thing out. i'm waiting to get my 22/250 back with a new 1-10 barrel
