22" .270 Win Load : Accuracy or Speed?

Hi All

Load developing for my Rem 700 rifle in .270Win. 22" pencil pipe barrel. wanting a good load for up to 300yd. Prod is Hornady 130gr SST. CBTO 2.800"/ 0.01" jump

See the pics of 2 loads shot at 100yrds yesterday. good weather and temp. Gun was off bench under shade of tree. 3 shot strings with cooling between. all the normal stuff.

I chronograph'd loads with a Crony branded one and they seem slow?? hit a node at 59gr 2213SC but speed only 2775 avg?? is this normal?

Maybe hitting a node at 61.5gr 2213SC, (was max I went to) speeds are better. no pressure signs showing.

Brass is Winchester brass, is this the problem?

What are others getting for speeds?

Do I just go for the 59gr load and take a hit on the velocity etc?

I would take accuracy every time over velocity. It does seem a little slow 2775fps for a 130gr but some barrels are different. I was getting 2900fps with the 130gr SST with a near max load 2213sc in 21" Finnlight barrel and groups 1/2" @ 100m. Have you tried different seating depths? it may help.

Take the accuracy.
A speed of 2775 will kill very well out to and beyond 300 yards.
SST's can get quite frangible on game if pushed too hard.
There are plenty of other powder options for more speed if you can't get the speed and accuracy that you are after from 2213SC.

Yeh I am the same, accuracy over speed.
Tiresome I know but I'd load another few loads around your safe but higher loads and chrono them. If happy enough with that id go with that node.
Your projectile choice will influence your wanted speed.

Did 100 rounds for my mate with 58gr 2213SC with the same pill. He was not interested in speed but accuracy. He head shoots with it spot lighting.How he does it I don't know but he is built like an outhouse.

My old Sako finnibear was 57 gn 2213 sc doing 3000fps with a 130 sierra. Clover leaf at 100. 24" barrel. Yours seems slow but go for accuracy. Only a few more clicks of elevation at the end of the day.

Shot a very similar group to #3 (59gr 2213SC) using the same prod, seating depth etc but 54.5gr 2209 powder, velocity was 2801 avg and ES 29.

What seating depths have you all tried and had success with? (I know it can be different in each rifle etc etc)

My book says 3.180 OAL. Did same load[powder] for 130gr Barnes but it goes to top cannelure for another mate running a can on his.Using it for bulls up the coast. Did a run in shot on a hind up the lake @250m thru the shoulders. Lifted it straight up then it plonked right down.

Baz, I also have a 22" inch barreled remington .270. My rifle is long throated and i seat the pills right out. I need to go to 56 gns of 2209, 55 gns of WW 760 or 63 gns of h4831/2213SC to get 3000 fps with a 130 gn projectile. I chrono a bit of factory and found a lot of american loadings (pmc, federal remington, winchester) do not give more than 2800 to 2900 fps. Regular cup and core 130s work really well at these velocities on medium game.

Switch to the 150 sst/58gn 2213, if you must use sst's, seat of the pants tells me that you will get around 2900 fps (yes faster than your 130 is doing), better bc, better sd, better velocity and better (more reliable) terminal performance than the 130 sst- try it, to prove the point I will send you a few if you need, at sub 2800 velocity for 130 in your .270, bin it and get a .308, cause your current .270 is missing the whole point of a .270 at the mo!

If you're only prepared to shoot out to 300yards (like, you only see Deer out to 300yards!) don't worry about "the point" of your calibre. At that distance and speed, your projectile will still be doing its job ie changing into a shape that kills yummy deer.

Beware the man who knows EXACTLY where his bullet will hit.

I get what you're saying, but the deer he shoots at 280yards doesn't give a fuck if the bullet that killed it could have killed another deer at 800yards.

Horses for courses and if you don't have a long range possie, why worry about it.

Plus, he's comparing a slower, accurate bullet with a fast, inaccurate bullet.

For hunting there's nothing wrong with that fast load.

Yes but the faster load is accurate enough for 300y easy and he hasn't found max yet, if he goes up another 50 100 fps he may find the next node which maybe as/more accurate [emoji3]

Agree VC, if it were me I wouldn't be happy with that slow load as the potential of the chambering is not being used. Yes it will kill animals no doubt but you may as well use a 7mm-08 then.
Sounds like your rifle may have a looser chamber as you ae not hitting any pressuere signs and the velocity is indicating that pressure is still low, push a bit more, be careful, and you shoud find another accuracy node at around 2900 to 3000.
Personally I would go to 150gr as recommended and probably a slower powder like 2217, this is when a .270 starts to make sense and becomes way more versatile.

Loading up a few upwards from 61.5gr and see if it comes back into a node.

Looking more to an accurate load because if it bug eyes and 100 it should be at worst MOA at 300, this allowing for more confidence in a light rifle, with only wind to account for. The higher velocity will no doubt add benefit to a a flat shooting load on a scope with no BDC turret or reticle.

I got the SFII 7mm RM running 162gr for more punch and distance past 300 and up to 1k.

Friend of mine loads 130gr SST with 760 and achieves 2960fps out of a 22" A Bolt.

I'm running 130SST with 61gn of W780 for 3030fps. Tikka T3 22" barrel and GW Suppressor. Sits between 0.4 to 0.8 MOA. I would try different seating depths.

the difference between 2770fps and the normal 3000-3100fps with a 130gr projectile will have a difference when it hits an animal. With 200fps more speed, the hydrostatic shock will be larger. But yea of course 2700fps will kill fine up to 300m, but there is a big difference when you talk about 200fps+ difference in speed

Like we keep getting told relentlessly threw the propaganda speed kills but when talking projectiles it actually is true :)

Moa at 300 is like slightly over 3". A 2moa rifle is good enough for 300yards. But agree it is nice to have an accurate rifle. Personally I would keep cranking that load up and make the most of that case, or try the 150's as mentioned.

I can't stand an inefficient load, mine are all stoked right up! I haven't seen any real accuracy improvement with them going slower but I tend to not start at minimum loads as I no I'm not going to use it at that velocity so no point wasting components

I chose accuracy over speed my 51.5gr charge of H4350 (2209) with a hornady 130gr sp is giving me around 2850fps and shots touching at 100 meters have tried finding the faster accuracy load but groups just keep getting bigger and the barrel becomes a flame thrower with a huge muzzle blast and that is at 3050fps. Once the H4350 I have got runs out then I might try going to H4831sc to try and get that faster and accurate load, have been told with my current load I may as well shoot a 7mm08 but hey it is a load my boy can handle it will be good out to 300 - 400 meters for hunting so who cares.

Baz I have just started to read this thread but. I am loading a 270win with 2209 @53.5 grains underneath a 130 scirroco. It averages 2910 fps, we never had to go higher so didn't find any pressure signs. Set up with sand bags it does 12mm groups.
