Thread: 2208, 2206H or 2206

Im sure its been covered but couldn't find it.

I have a 16ich suppressed 7mm08 wanting to push 140ABs any advice on complete burn ect from above powders ?

I've used 2206H in a couple of 17" 7mm-08 and seems the ducks nuts...40.5gn has been better than 1/2 moa but obviously work up to it...the 140 BTs are a much better hunting projectile if the range starts getting out there

The most popular for 7mm08 is 2208 gives good velocity 2206H is faster burning 2206 is faster again but is no longer in production
if you are worried about getting a complete burn use 2206H
Personally I would find the most accurate load and not worry about which powder, you are going to get crap left in the barrel and suppressor
with what ever powder you use.

I can vouch for both 2208 and 140gr AB's (20" tube though). IMO 140gr BT's are a far better all rounder regardless of the range. You won't be pushing them that hard anyway, so their performance up close will be a lot better and further out, they will leave the AB for dust.

For a barrel that short I'd say go with 2206H over 2208, but as per above accuracy is what you really want so try both if you can. 2206 would be pretty hard to find, I'd forget that one.

@Speartime and @Pop Shot what are the BT's like on a wet red or a big old boar at close range any experince ?

The 140gr AB and BT shot identical in my rifle as they are the same bullet design, just different internal construction. When chasing red stags/sambar - I always stacked a AB for the up close and personal stuff. In saying that, I wouldn't hesitate shooting anything at anything range with the BT though.

I've only used BTs in 7mm Mag not 7mm latte so can't help you on that.
Why don't guys use the 150gn BTs in their 7-08s?

I my experience the NBT's are a stout bullet these days. Any reputation they may have of being 'explody' stems from the early version of the NBT's that were more lightly constructed. IIRC Nosler listened to the feedback way back then and changed the construction of the BT.

Ive shot deer with various NBT's, 6.5mm 100gr doing 3300 out of my 260 rem at a range of 25 yards, 7mm 120gr from 7mm08 going quick, 150gr 7mm from 284win doing 3k at ranges from 20 yards to 750. All have worked beautifully. Ive just changed to a 140nbt in my 15" 7mm08 as well, but havnt killed anything with it as yet.

I dont think you need to worry too much about the modern NBT's, i'd trust them well ahead of a 7mm 139 gr SST, but thats not saying much ;-)

I use 120 grn NBT in my 7-08 (@3k). They are quite a stout bullet and I get lots of pass-throughs which I like. I understand they are made like that to knock over steel ram silhouettes. I've never had one "blow up" at any range and really trust them. I've used 165 and 168 grn NBT in 300 mag and 300saum and they too have been great at all ranges.

They are a much maligned bullet for no particular reason. I think it goes back to when they were first introduced and they were a bit thin in the jacket and explody. But not now.

I used 125 BTs in my MLR .308 in the 90s and they were a bit fragile for my liking. Using 150 BTs in my 7mmRM now and no complaints.
Here's the result of one passing through a chamois buck I shot recently. Broadside through the shoulder at 200 yards. The bigger rock was about 3m behind the chamois.

I think 2206H would be the way to go in a short barrel too.

For all round use the Bt's would be better than the AB's. My nephew used the AB's (140) in his 7mm 08 for a while and found they worked ok until they slowed down at a bit of range then the didn't open up as well.
