Hey guys have a loaded sorted for my 284 using 2209 and 162eldms but have a bit of 2208 I did not realise I had from previous rifles. Anyone use that powder in their 284s? Loaded up some 145gr speer sps using the adi book data for 2208 which will be tested this weekend but hoping to hear real world experiences. Cheers

Not in 284, but I am currently developing a load using 2208 in 8x57. The chrony results are good (C.V < 1%) was hoping to get some groupings this weekend.
I see that ADI lists 2208 for most calibers, so I was thinking of running an experiment with .223 and see what happens.
What are your load details for the eldm with 2219 mate?
For anyone interested 2208 behind the 145gr speers went well. 49grs and with a Coal of just over 3" I am shooting MOA without having to change the dials for my eldm load as they are both pretty much bang on at 100m so that is a big win. Hopefully test on a deer next week

This is because thier stated data with 760 showed the max load a few Grains less than the 2209, for roughly the same speed. This was important to me as with 2209 I was getting compressed loads, yet no real pressure signs. So I wanted to try a powder that left me a bit of wriggle room. So I loaded a few different loads up with 150gn Ballistic Tops and headed to the range to see how they went. I am pretty bloody happy so far! As I am not really a great sort by any means.

Neither leads are showing any pressure signs, so I will push it a bit further. Although I will wait for the Forum Chrony to get here so I can check the speeds.
The only thing that had me puzzled was that some rounds would not chamber. Now this is using brand new brass. So are you supposed to run new brass through a sizing die first?

Very nice groups Scott. :thumbsup: Be interesting to see what speed they're at. Yeah, sometimes you'll find brand new brass that wont chamber, especially if your chamber is on the tight side. Seen it a couple of times, with the fancy expensive brands of brass
Oh that's good to know. And yes when my rifle was chambered I was told that it did have a tight chamber. So I suppose I'll have to go ahead and run the rest of the brass through the sizing die. I'll just have to pull the ones that would not chamber i suppose.Quote:

W760 is same as H414. I've been using H414 in my short barreled 284 with 162 Amaxs for a few years now. It's a bloody good powder.Quote:

I think 2208 is prolly a bit fast for 162s, but it seems to be working well for you.
I use 2213sc with 162 ELD-X. That gives me a very leisurely 2600 fps with 55.5 grains from a factory length T3. It’s a way under max load but very accurate. I could much go faster, but it’s killed everything pretty dead up to 340 yards so far.
Wonder if they still be using 2208 in 2208? I doubt they were using it in 284

Hi bro, The win 760 powder is doing really good on my 284. If I do my part right easy 1/4 inch group at 100m , however, win 760 is temperature sensitive! Same loads, from summer to winter the velocity drop about 4 FPS per degree. Do you use the same load all year round and adjust the velocity data on the ballistic app if shooting long range?Quote:

Needless to say been willing to throw the towel in a few times with the rifle but think I have it sussed now. Has killed more animals than any other rifle I have owned but wasn't shooting tight enough groups, as above you will see i have overcome with ssts shooting consistently sub MOA and that gameking load shooting just over 0.5moa. Would assume the gamekings are moving a bit faster than the SSTs given the POI but could be wrong

Thought I'd chip in with some results albeit different to AR2208
So my rifle is a T3 7mm-08 reamed out to .284 and cut back to 16 inch with a DPT over barrel suppressor and a Stug carbon fibre stock which I've been running for the past few years and it's accounted for a fear few sika, fallow, reds and now chamois.
My favorite load is 53 gr AR2209 behind a 150 Sierra Game King which will give me 2557 fps and give me great groupings out to 300 mtrs which is the furthest I've tested.
I was running my loads through another chronograph which unbeknown to me was giving me false higher readings until I tried a Labradar so all of the speeds I'll mention below have been tested with a labradar.
I've just taken what I've written from my reloading/note book aswell as any comments I wrote beside them as I rarely keep the actual test targets.
150 gr Sierra Game King (# 1913)
53 gr AR2209 = 2571 fps
54 gr AR2209 = 2616 fps
56 gr RE17 = 2934 fps (a bit hot, back off 1 grain)
140 gr Sierra Pro Hunter
53 gr RE17 = 2693 fps
54 gr RE17 = 2797 fps
55 gr RE17 = 2871 fps
RE17 wasn't producing tight enough groups.
140 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
54 gr RE17 = 2812 fps
55 gr RE17 = 2894 fps (3/4 inch grouping at 100 mtrs, try again)
56 gr RE17 = 2958 fps
Performance
RE17 gives faster speeds as per the results show and it also gives a heavier recoil where as AR2209 doesn't.
I found the best groups with 150 Sierras was with AR2209 and with 140 Ballistic Tips was RE17
As for projectile performance and I speak from my own experiences is that the power of the 150 gr Sierras have always passed through Sika hinds, Sika stags leaving one hell of a blood trail. On Fallow I found them to not open up as quickly so I always figured a lighter 140 gr projectile would do better.
I did read of a north American hunter who only ever hunted with a .284 win with a 140 gr class projectile. I can't find that article but it was interesting reading as he'd accounted for numerous Elk with the 140's
As I'm now in the south Island I'm toying with the idea of rebarreling to a longer 20 inch barrel but in .284 so I can get more speed with the 150's out to 400 mtrs.
Is there anyone on here with a 20 inch .284 who could share their experiences?
I have the std 22" tikka reamed out by the same Smith who did superdivers. I've had more or less the same groupings, around moa with whatever I've tried. Currently running a mild 51 grains of 2209 behind a 160 Sierra tmk doing 2740. Shoots sub Moa, but not as tight as I like. Going to work up a load for the game king and the Berger 168 and see how i get on.
I am running 2209 for both loads now as opposed to one of each. Think it is 54.5grs of 2209 behind a 150gr gameking which I aim to chrony tomorrow but it is sub MOA and from what I gather a very good killing projectile. Interesting to hear you say you find it passes through sika hinds etc as thought being a sp it would expand a bitQuote:

I think with the Fallow I would choose a faster opening projectile, Ballistic tips are a harder projectile still.
Personally for hunting Sika & Fallow I always found it hard to not use my .223 as they were just bang flops and often I'd fine the projectile nicely mushroomed on the far side under the skin.
My thoughts on the subject was that with the bigger calibres the projectile was still travelling and often right through the animal where a lot of it's energy wasn't being dumped in the animal where as with the .223 all of it's energy was even though I would be shooting the deer in the same spot, crease behind the shoulder.

Again not 2208 but I have a 16" barreled .284 tikka and have been using 53.5 of rl17 with 150 gamekings @2730 for the last year. Have shot a few deer an bull tahr out past 400m with it and it seems to have enough grunt. The one deer at 611m i shot didn't go so well and needed another shot to sort it out. So i limit my range to around 450m. as also mentioned above I tried 2209 and it did group slightly better but the 17 gave me more fps for the same powder weight. I'm about to try out some 150 accubonds with 17 and 2209 hopefully over the weekend.
Good luck with those as i found them to be an expensive projectile. I ran them in a .280 Rem and on the two sika stags I shot they just pencilled through and needed finishing shots. I shot my first bull thar with the same rifle and load and it needed four shots all in the chest.Quote:

Tested the gamekings today and my 3 shots read 2771, 2774 & 2770 so an ES of 4fps which I am pretty happy with. Shot my ssts and they were about the same but an ES of 30~fps so plugged that into my ballistic app and took a shot at a target at 795yds which gave me 20.93moa to dial however that saw me shooting very low so to get onto target I ended up dialling another 7-8 MOA which saw me getting good groupings but based on that I would not even be doing 2500fps which cannot be right as it is nearing max load and my barrel is not that short(19" plus I have a suppressor ).
