223 help

ok I feel a bit of a dumb arse having to ask as I can usually figure this shit out my self but here I am so ive got this nea ar15 got it brand new its always had an accuracy problem so me being me I like to get it sorted myself as I got it as a thing to mod etc after putting the bits in it I wanted I think ive got the rifle part sorted its got a better trigger 14.5" spanners barrel carbine gas system standard gas block and running a mae can on it the main problem with it was the barrel nut was loose from new so now I feel theres a problem with my hand loads ive shot 55gr pills up to 69sierra hpbt which go the best but now I'm getting pressure problems which once sorted should get it more accurate I hope I started with the go to load of 25gr 2206h coal was to fit mag but kept blowing primers out so ive backed it off to 24.5gr 2206h I'm getting really flat primers and some are piercing it seems like a mild load in the adi book so I'm going to go back to 24gr any quirky things I should look for in this kind of set up and yes I know should of worked up so far with my reloading ive found I could safely start mid way with the load data cheers

Take off the can put a terminator brake on and just buy hornady sst superformance ammo :thumbsup:

I fukn hate those things it came with one as well

Due to your honesty, I'll up my offer to 250.... :)

how ever all I can say is @Kiwi Greg is since finally fitting the T3 brake on my 223 Ar15 well recoil is less, follow up shots are quicker and more accurate. definitely maybe a bit more louder for the poor bastards who wish to stand to the side of me but I don't care it is faster easier and quicker to lay rounds down range

youd be better off with a sks the way this thing has gone worst case ill get another one that goes well and swap parts until I find out what it is but want to eliminate the ammo for now

223 has bugger all recoil to begin with

Yes and now even less with the t3 I had to go T3 because of the bull barrel, now my 5 year old likes pulling that sensitive 3 gun match trigger

one thing I should try I guess is make a dummy round and chamber it and see if the projectile is jammed in the lands

or give up hand loading and buy factory Hornady rounds :thumbsup:

Try some factory as a few have said and see if the problem persists factory is pretty hot for pressure anyway. Measure coal of your reloads against the factory stuff then freebore drop a projectile in the chamber and tap lighly onto the lands measure distance from the muzzle end. Repeat with a dummy round the difference is the bullet jump to the rifling. It might not help but it cant hurt to know.

Check your head space to make sure your brass isn't to short

Make sure its not over gassing, it most likely is with the suppressor & no adjustable gas block.

ok it still gives the pressure sighns with suppressor removed I thought an adjustable gas block only altered the pressure going back to cycle the action ammo seems to chamber properly has any one local got a headspace gauge or got a way of measuring it

Starting to sound like a headspace issue to me especially since you mentioned the barrel nut.
Have you got access to a chrony?
How far is the brass being thrown? Does it fall in a cluster after the first couple rounds when cold or does it go all over the place?

yep got a chrony it throws the brass about a meter from the gun it lands in the same spot

Are your velocities where you would expect them to be with given load?
Are the velocities over a string within 100fps?

Mate I'd be following up on R93's and Kiwi greg's line of thinking - and also see if you can try a couple of other uppers to find something that works for you (like a adj gas block) if you start changing stuff. My money is on it being the brass/chamber size and you having a non adjustable gas block with the supressor fitted creating extra pressure.

I havnt chronyed it its a spanners barrel so guessing its a military chamber all brass gets fl sized so an adj gas block affects chamber pressure and cyceling pressure I'm not fully clued up on ars yet but reducing cyceling pressure would increase chamber pressure wouldn't it

and it doesn't seem to make a difference with the can on or off that's why I'm thinking ammo I should of saved a couple of rounds and pulled them apart and weigh the powder charge on someone elses scales it could be any number of things just after ideas for process of elimination and gain an understanding of how the thing works its a pretty simple set up but they do have their quirks that sometimes aren't obvious

It is not a gas issue in my opinion.
A few things aside, a safe load in a bolt gun of similar barrel dimensions will be safe in an AR.

As you know you are only ducting off gas to cycle the action. Being able to adjust that for a given load or a suppressor is the benefit of an adj gas block. But even if you block the gas port right off, and the rifle should fire a safe load with no pressure signs.

Something else is going on.
Brass being thrown approx a meter away from the rifle is a lot less than my AR which is balanced and uses an identical load I use in my bolt .223 Might not be a biggy due to other things but could be an indicator of something else.

Barrel could be tight or a brass issue in turn causing headspace issues.
Hard to say without looking at it in person.

Yes, that would be one of the first things I would check. The very first would be powder charge, which looks okay according to the adi website which has the same projectiles.

Thanks that's kind of what I'm thinking what's the safest I could go at the low end of the scale as I've heard low loads can be dangerous as well been loading for a long time and havnt come across this before got some super x to try in it as well

I have a 3 gun load that has 22.5grn of 2206h with a 64 grn projectile. Use it with a suppressor. Don't use it much anymore tho.
Never tried anything lower sorry. Someone else might know.

That load sounds piss weak honestly. With a proper 5.56 chamber, you should be able to run 26gr of 2206h under a 55gr bullet no problem. In all of the AR baŕrels I have had or have, anything less than book max is aenimic.

Yea I know so what's a list of things that will give pressure sighns other than loads to high

24.5grns AR2206h has been my go to load with pills from 45-55grns for years in my bolt action....... with 55grn pills it should be fine.... I use dog breakfast of brass and for last few years it has all been milserp as got given a heap of it......all things being equal the milserp brass SHOULD have higher pressure but I ve never seen any issues at all.
as others have said what does it do with a factory load????
that will give you peace of mind straight away as you arent 2nd guessing yourself re are my loads the issue????

I use milsurp brass and rate it as good as any other brand.

No run out. Lasts for ages. And the best bit is it was free.

Just took a bit of effort to get the primer pockets to point where they work on my progressive press.

I'm using ppu brass which is the same as highland I think never had problems with it in the past

Had a thought. Load up a dummy round and try and chamber it by hand just pushing the back of the BCG with your finger. Not under the influence of the buffer spring. See how that goes.

This may be a stupid suggestion but have you had it head spaced? I assume you now have the NEA bolt in the spanners barrel.

No I havnt I'm on the search for some gauges to check it would it be safe to assume if the bolt closes on a Winchester factory round that its ok

Not necessarily. The "No go"gauge will indictate excessive headspace if it chambers.

It may bee too much. Were the primers protruding?

A Canadian made bolt with Asian made barrel might be at too extremes of the "mill spec" limits...

@R93 beat me to it.

Not sure where the barrels made I think its an over run from a military order from memory if I have to buy gauges I suppose I should get go and no go instead of just no go
