I am looking at a short 223 what speeds are people getting with a 16 inch barrel.

Depends on powder and projectile weight. Most book max loads will get a 55gr doing around 2800fps. 2206H I'd a great powder for 16". 26gr if your gun can handle it should squeeze about 2900 with a 55gr.

Was getting around 2900 from 55 grain with hornady training ammo (Brass case)

I get 2900 with BM2 and Nosler 60gr partitions hand loads.

That's pretty good for 16".I'm getting 890m/s (2920fps) with a standard length tikka with 75 grain amax's.
IIRC @7mmsaum has a few short 223s

Below are my loads I'm currently using in my CMMG 16" 1 in 7 twist AR15

60gr Hornady SP / 25grs BM2 = 2860fps

65gr Sierra Spitzer / 23.5grs BM2 = 2700fps

69gr X-Ring Custom HPBT / 22.5grs BM2 = 2550fps

fps quoted here are five shot averages.

The 65gr Sierra's and BM2 are a deadly combination and my current favourite Goat load.

I wouldn't hesitate to take a deer under 200m with this load as well.
