Thread: .224 55GN Nosler BT

Iv got a couple of boxs of these projectiles . They appear to be older packaging and everything I can find at a quick glimpse on Google suggests that the nosler bt in 20 and 22 cal are a Varmint projectile. The packages on the Google images boxs does stat varmint where as mine do not. My intentions were to poke them at fallow necks and hearts in .223 . Iv never played with Varmint projectiles but read their very explosive . Can any body confirm that they have successfully used them in this application or is there two versions of them? My choice was based on them being kick a kick ass projectile in 6.5 and 7mm. Iv also got nosler shots that might be better suited and save these the range bunnys and so on .

Here is the new packaging stolen from Google and iv spied the serial number is the same so iv answered one of my questions myself the nosler shots are just a dirty little lead nose 55gn as might be better suited

Used them in the past left fist size holes in the necks of goats would advise against use on deer they are to explosive when they hit

It doesn't matter. You really do need to place a .223 projectile in the proper place regardless . If you start from that premise vmax are fine on deer (as many know). From there on out the error of margin increases through to 80 grn ELDM and the 77 grn Tipped Sierra.

I would be very happy plonking an old 55 grn BT into a deers lungs. 52 grn BT from the same era were just fine.

Still use the old Nosler Solid Base 55gr, has done the job for me for 40 years if I do mine with shot placement.

These are the bullets I have used in my 22 250 for a long time. They have taken a few reds and fallow and quite a few goats. I find they are reliable killers even on bigger animals. One fallow buck my wife shot many years back was hit in the brisket at about 60 yards, he spun round and tumbled into a gully. When we gutted him we found the bullet jacket in the middle of the gut bag. With good bullet placement they are deadly. On rabbits they are dynamite and recently I used them on Bennet Wallabies also found them very effective. Probably the only place you wouldn't want to hit an animal is in the shoulder blade on a big stag, you may get blow up on that shot. Lung shooting and they don't go far at all.

In a 223 at a bit slower speed they may hold together a bit better and penetrate more, my 22 250 has them going at 3600 fps and I don't have any issues with them.

mate up north uses them on sika with great results......Ive shot a few hares n rabbits with them,accurate enough,wouldnt mind having more of them. NBTs are great accurate projectiles FULL STOP.

Brilliant all very good reading so far . Iv had and issue with exploding projectiles a couple of years ago and it wasnt very empathetic even in the neck of young fallow didnt want a repeat. They were not NBTs

The nosler shots you mentioned were especially popular with roo shooters in Australia and I used to load them. They were an outstanding little bullet

Brilliant to hear I have 1000 of them they came in boxs of 500 @nor-west how many did you want iv got 500 plenty for me to spare some

All the .224 Noslers are varmint projectiles, they never made a large game in that size. You need to buy some Euro made if you want a tougher bullet, like Lapua & Norma.

I have headshot Fallow with these opportunistically. Where they were considered pests. They stood still and went down lightning fast

I've head shot pigs, same thing.
I'm not promoting them as a Hunting projectile but I have used plenty and will use them some more.n
