22mag Vs 9mm. Which will have best knockdown for possums?

I currently have a 22magnum i use for possums/Rabbits and it goes well.

I Do majority of Possum shooting at 20-40m so it doesnt seem right to zero the Magnum at this length.

There are some nice 9mm rifle options available that would suit a closer range zero.

My question is though what will be the knockdown difference?

    Any ideas?

9mm would have roughly 100 ft/lb energy at 100y? Would make it the better option for short range knockdown.

This. If an air rifle is good enough, there isn't much difference between 22M and 9mm.

But 9mm would have a way bigger smile factor.

9 mm would require a backstop or for you to line up a half dozen or so to prevent "rain on the roof" for the neighbors. 22 mag is a little more frangible but safe shooting practice still applies.

Of course it doesnt "matter", Small game at close range is not a difficult prospect. My real decision i have to make is, Zero my 22mag to 30-40m or buy a different rifle and have it fit for purpose. If im going to get a better knockdown aswell and get a few more smiles then these are bonus features...

I assume you are talking from experience? What range do you think is best to Zero a 9mm for possums? Thanks

I am, only shot a few of them with it as normally use a shotgun on them for safety.

Mine is zeroed for 40m with a red dot-if I was setting up fir possums only I would consider 30m or less. This is for a AR as the sight Is so far above the bore-a real issue on small targets at close range
