    .243 for 500m shots

Bored stiff at work and thinking of long range .243's. I know the best twist for these are 1:7 or 1:8 and shooting 105gr's or 107gr's, But what about the ever popular 9.125 twist Remington tubes?
Has anyone tried the new 6mm 103gr ELDX? Anyone have an idea on the length of the bullet @300AAC do you have these in stock?

Thanks Beavis, I see their length IIRC is 1.226, my twist should work up to 1.15-1-.19ish so if the 103's are shorter it might be ok.

Targex do a 105 designed for a 1:10 I think, might be worth a test.

Yeah not sure why the comment Brad's with an appropriate pill you still have over 1000foot pounds energy @500m or more than most 223's at 100.

I've seen lots of animals shot with them mate and consider the effective range a lot less.
I think the 243 is a fantastic calibre but realise it's limitations.
If your where a client hunting with a 243 300 yards would be the maximum distance you'd be aloud to shoot from.
Hope you find this helpful Remember clean kills are where it's at.

Yep the 243 is a great little caliber but for animals 300 yards is a long way. OK for shooting steel out further but not animals.

Thank you for your input Brads, I'm sure you've seen more than your share of poor shooting and slow kills.

I'm still keen to hear more First hand experience from people shooting appropriate pills for the intended range. There is plenty over in the USA forums but hoped to hear more local feedback.

Don't listen to the yanks for fuck sake. Most shoot 100lb deer say it was an elk and use premium ammo and think 200 yards is 500.

I had good luck with mine, although we're going back about 8 years since I had a .243 last. It worked with the 95gr Targex. Shot goats out to about 600m, nanny tahr at 500, a big 12" bull tahr at 450.

It would work better with a heavier/higher BC bullet than the 95gr.

I went with a 6.5 when I rebarrelled the .243 because it works better for a negligible increase in recoil though.

Would I use a .243 again? Yes, including for longer range shots, within my own comfort zone with it, but I'd want a 1:8" twist to shoot something 100gr + and .5+ BC

You just heard it from two kiwis who would have shot more deer each than 99.9% of yanks

The trouble with the 243 (at distance) is the little pill. It may have 1000ft/lbs at x distance, but when it hits something it looses that energy VERY quickly. It (and others) just don't have the momentum to expand AND penetrate well.
