    250savage

    Anyone shooting one?
I have 2 on the way this week. One an FN Mauser and the other a savage99.

    Being 50s rifles they'll likely be 14twist
I'm looking to shoot 100gr. MV likely to be ~2850. Thinking either speer hot cors, Hornady interlock or the softer sierra gameking or speer btsp to help with broad wound channel out ~250m.

    Appreciate your thoughts

    Listening avidly
Got a long suffering P14 25-303 project with a 1-12 that I havent ever shot.
From the massive amount of research, the 1-14 will need very short for weight 100grs of worst case 87s.
Envious of the savage although one of the holy grails for those is a 284win

Have an Oberndorf Kurz Mauser with a 1-10 barrel so will stabilise all bullets up to 120 grain, will shoot accubonds into a thumbnail size group but the soft 100 grain you have mentioned would be the best game bullet if you can get them to stabilise.

Yeah, they were built for the 85/87gr. Most net search says regular 100gr go ok but not as tight as the 85s.

These are roughie project rifles so will be interesting to see what's what.

25-303 is a pretty rare duck these days too. Popular in oz at one time?

I'm a Sav 99 fan. So will follow with interest.

Have a read but sounds like you know this already. Great caliber for goats and smaller deer, or larger deer in North island bush.
Unless you can get some good high BC light bullets then the Game Kings would be a good go to.
(ie berger list a 115 gr as the lightest 250 cal bullet they make which may be a bit long for 1950's rifles mags.)

After a re-run on captain Google I think ill start out with some 87gr. The Hornady sp and sierra spt are varmint/medium game capable. Found a good thread from a pest controller shot hundreds of whitetails around an airport with them. Through and through with big exits

@Pushover How did he do it? Typical american lung shots?
    Also suspect smaller deer maybe?
Yes very popular there and most done on smles I believe and a lot with 1-14 twist. I have a nearly full box of the 87gr supers they used in them but they are meant to be quite lightly built especially at the speeds used in the 303 action
P14 can be loaded a little hotter
Speed and BC very limited but the 117 Honda RN will theoretically work in the 1-12. Maybe even the 14

yes Nathan's material is always a point of reference for me

best in a 10 twist. 110gr eldx or 100gr ballistic tip be good I would think. Not enough speed on for the heavies at anything but bush range. AI it and Could carry them bit better.

The old 14twist best with 87/90gr or short 100gr. JDM CALC indicates the 100gr speer hot cor, sierra pro hunter or Hornady interlock should go ok. Prolly be pretty reliable up close but id like something a bit frangable out at ~200m. I'm gonna try 90gr sierra hpbt to keep wounding a bit wider. Lung or neck shots up closer(if I can)

interesting. Yeah the p14 can take full pressure if the metallurgy is up to it. Someone blew up an eddystone last year I think.

117rn be a good bush blaster.

This guy was using these frangables and getting through and through penetration with shoulder or lung shots. Average range ~200m. 3" exits. That was on whitetail

They supplied the local prison with the meat

Gidday - From my 250-3000 days (see Nor-wests post above haha) I have Sierra 90 gn HPBT, and both 100gn SP and SPBT if you'd like some

Yes please Tentman. Appreciate your experience with terminal performance with these.

I was thinking the 90gr hpbt might be good but if the 100gr expand at range and shoot well then maybe they're better?

If you AI it, it will be outstanding. Will shoot 100s at 3000fps no trouble. Beware soft light bullets going fast in a 25 cal the light ones are coyote / varmint bullets and blow to pieces on deer. I have been shooting 110 AB's in fireform loads at 3000fps in a 2506 AI. I shot a 15 month hind on Saturday with pass through and a measured 2ltrs of damaged trim, this normal. If shooting deer, I would use a quality bullet like a Partition if 100 gr or less in the 250/ 3000 and the 110 AB for an AI. If posting photos was easy I would put some up of deer shot with the 110 AB

The 87 are very soft. Varmit and roo pills. 100 gn Hornady are no longer made.

Had a savage 99 but trigger and ergonomics were not for me. Try before you buy.

In reality a .243W is a better option and killed this round but you will have some fun.
