.270 , 130 sst and 2209 0r 2209 or N160

I have been out to the range a couple of times recently .
Looking to replicate a good load in .270 using the hndy 130 sst .
Now the original load made 3013 ft/sec . but i dont have the RL 15 anymore . It was a nice load . A mild Whomph , so to speak, and no drama to look at in the primers .
So i got to do with what i got .
out of the 3 powders , which would you go for to make a load a touch over 3k ?
I have tried the 2209 , buts its on the edge of HOT at 54.5 grs and feels like it as well Attachment 256333 so that is case is the 2nd to last case . The V= 2998 ft/sec for that round Note all the primers have bulged a bit from the first case at 53.0 gr to the last at 55.0 gr
The least offensive was case at 3 V=2991 ft//sec and 54 grs , but all the rounds went of with a loud "crack "

So , its the N160 next or the 2208 . Which do you reckon ? Got a pet load for the 270 using the 130 sst,s ?
By the way i am now out of the 130.s , but i got a tray of Large rifle to trade , i someone is interested .

One of the best loads I found for my old 270 was 58gns of Superformance with the 130 SST. And I also loaded some 140 Interlocks, but cant recall the load with SPF. The SST's shot and killed well, but the Interlocks were a tad more decisive than the SST's.

I'll have it written down somewhere but as above superformance gave me 3120fps out of a 22" and the 130gr ssts. From memory reloder 26 wasn't too far off.

2208 will likely be underwhelming. Adi powder choices will be 2209, 2213sc and 2217. Max load of 2213sc has always been a go to .270 load.

If you haven’t gone too far with the load development, I’d suggest trying the 140 grainers. The SSTs have a rep for blowing up, but I found the heavier-for-calibre variety to be good.

Loading with 2213sc, can’t remember charge sorry but they were doing about 2840 fps from memory out of a 24” barrel. A bit slower than you were getting, but countered by a higher BC and the slower speed possibly also helps them stay in one piece.

Firstly nothing in those cases says hot. The radius of the primers are still round. Firing pin hole maybe a touch large as getting some primer back into it but not unusual.

Bolt not tight to open, primers not blowing out?

Stay with this 54.5 gn load or come back .5 gn if it helps you sleep.

2208 is very close to RL15 but I’d use the 09 or n160. N160 is slower than 09 so work up from 54.

I have run 150g sst 56gr h4831 with large magnum rifle primers. Av 2730 fps
Started at 53gr and work my way up in .5grs at a time.
150s ssts are a different beast to the 130 imo.
Trying the 145 eldx. They are wickedly accurate in my strata. Yet to shoot any deer with this load but are reliable by all accounts.

What about the N160? Load data from Vihta Vouri on their site lists a start of 51.5 grains and a max of 58 grains for 3,083 fps with the 130 grain Remington projectile in the .270. It would easily be the best of the powders you have I would have thought. AR2213SC is available as well.

I'm not sure what the problem is here. If the vels are near reasonable, the bigger issue is accuracy which trumps velocity every time. What size groups are you getting?

As for the loads giving a crack, it's a .270.. Those primers all look fine as has been said.

I actually did a batch of reloads for a mate the other day with those 130s and 53.5 of 2209. Can't recall the vel but they easily kill deer.

IMR 4350. close to AR2209, was the go to powder for the .270 before the surplus 4831 appeared and IMR4064, close to AR2208, before that. O'Connor often used IMR4064 long after the other two appeared due to its accuracy in the .270.

And as I've mentioned before JOC had a 4064 load that used to shoot well accuracy wise back in the day but changed to 4831 as it was faster.

H4831 or 2213 is good in the .370. Often shows a big lesson pressure. Max loads are 58.5 with a 150 and 60 gns with a 130.
I’ve been up to 63/63 where you have a long magazine and long throat.

If you don’t like the results from 09 try the N160. It’s a good powder.

I had heard that about IMR4064 being a somewhere near the 2208 . Ironic i have 2208 and 2209 just when i need to have this discussion . thanks for the history lesson

What the man said. Use 59gr. Be in the zone. 270 has a big boiler room. Otherwise use 110gr Barnes. Then you have whistling death.

2213sc worked well for me back in the day when I owned a 270 x57gr or thereabouts with 130grSSTs

Well if you change your mind, im local and usually keep a reasonable stock of it, it hasnt been too hard to get unlike CCI primers

Medium burning powders were only used in the .270 back in the day as they had a limited choice and no slower options. You can do better than 2208 I reckon.

Yes, it's a close match. Just have a look in the ADI guide. There is a set of tables/chart showing "equivalents "

If you read the 270/4064 article he suggests that 4064 doesn't quite act the same in the 270.
He couldn't quite explain it, bit it seemed to act like the burn rate differed in the cade than what it should be.7

We use a truck load of N160 in the .270 and .25-06 years back gave bloody great speeds and accurate.
Lately I've used Hodgdon Superperformance with 145 eldx also works well

Unless you dialling up n stretching the barrel,why chase velocity if load is accurate enough to do what you need it to do,leave it alone and just go shoot it.
