Thread: 270 150gr SST

Righto let the fun begin lol
Generally speaking most find the 130gr SST a bit to explodey. Ok a fair way out maybe but not so flash up close.
The 150s on the other hand are quite different.
Word has it they are quite good
What sort of projectile do they perform like once they hit the animal?

somewhat like a 150grain hornady SST I would expect...

Would be in line with the Noslar BT, and ELDX

I found them to be pretty good. If they shoot well in your rifle go for it. I went down the line of annealing based on balistics guy up north. Although it is probably nonsense and I wouldn't bother with that again.

well the eldx is after all just a slipperier sst and only 5 grains lighter....

They are obviously a more slippery type bullet but how tough are they? Are they a bit more aggressive up close and better for further out or just more useable all around?
An example is the 8mm 180gr ballistic tip
They do not follow the normal rule of ballistic tips and maybe developed for the 8mm rem mag but are way more stout than the 170gr 8mm BT.
Are they a long range jobbie ?

from all Ive ever read about them...pretty much similar preformance to normal cup n core jobbie...work fine up close and will open up ok out mid range...just load them up and shoot some stuff....in 34 years of using a .270 I cannot recall ever having projectile fail to kill animal other than when tried a 110grn varmit on small fallow,that still haunts me,bullet blow up on surface isnt pretty... the 150grn norma follow up ended it quickly.
if you really unsure and reluctant to use them..I have unopened box of 150 grn speer grandslams here..... THEY WORK GREAT.....
cant see a fellow .270 user short of ammunition.

I have acquired quite a few different 270 projectiles in anticipation of the parker hale project finally seeing the proper light of day. I have a pretty full box of 150 ssts, a box of 150 norma oryx, a bag of 130 power points and a few other part boxes of 140 accubonds 130 Bts and some 130 partitions.
Plus a bunch of hot handloaded 130 ssts but they will be modified somewhat before testing.
TBH once I get a couple sorted wont need them all.

so looking at that list.
130 partition...perfect for everything..stoke it up hot and shoot stuff.
130grn NBT...great pill,load it up hot and break the shoulders....stuff will die well...last animal I shot was 80lb boar at 125ish yards,hit in neck,no issue cutting head off!
140 accubond......yeah buggered if I know....
130 power points,great factory load,not as explody as the silver tips it was twinned with back in 90s...
150 norma oryx....has reputation as great bush pill...load it hot and take out front wheels
150SSTs ...load em hot and shoot stuff....

hmmm I see a common theme here..... load em hot ,take out front wheels,stuff will die.....

If it was me I would do some load dev. etc with the 130 Powerpoints - I think you bought a big bag ? then swap over to your 130 Partitions which are going to be a better all purpose all angles projectile for hunting. The load and seating for the Partition should end up close to the PP

I used the 180gn sst and recovered some text book projectiles from Tahr red deer and samber theirs a simple formula let me check my book

130+270= really fucking fast
150+270=moderate speed

Now if you divide really fucking fast by SST it equals disaster.

But interesting enough if you divided moderate by SST and carry the .270 it equals pretty blimen good .

and...and.....and.... use said same load with your 130 NBT for the out past 250-300 stuff LOL....sounds like plan to me.

If I was use a 270 again, the 150gr SST would be the first projectile I'd try. If it shot to acceptable accuracy I'd call it done and not bother with anything else.

so , i,m watching this discussion . Cause i have some 150,s soft rn nose coming from a seller on TM . What I am waiting for is someone to let slip what is a reliable recipe that I can take to the range and try .
