270 Precision Hunter slower than Grandma’s vitz?

Hey guys, so fairly inexperienced and also not super worried but I have been shooting my 270 today, it’s a 21” model 70 with a 1:10 twist. Shooting factory precision hunter 145 eldx.
    2” high at 100y
    190y zero
    2.5” low at 235y
    21” low at 377y
It’s a 3-9x40 leupold scope and I’m not dialing nor do I have a chronograph, just shooting at a target and measuring my drop. Using the Hornady app it seems the load is only doing 2635fps? Anybody else experiencing this or have I done something wrong?
Again this is a close to mid range hunting rifle and I’m not overly worried about the speed it’s shooting under moa and will do just fine for what I intend on using it for but I was surprised at the low speed and was hoping for possibly a touch more speed resulting in less drop for hold over shots at more distance 300y ish
Curious on others experiences or tips.
    Cheers

Have you tried 130 grain through it?

If you want to know what the velocity is you need to chronograph the round. Anything else is just opinion.

There have been a couple of youtubers suggesting that Hornady are struggling to get the powders they would like for their ammunition and are having to substitute other powders which can result in less speed.

They were specifically talking about the 7 Prc but it could easily be an issue across their entire Precision Hunter range.

I have experienced very disappointing results with Precision Hunter in 7mm08 in both accuracy and speed. In a M70 as well funnily enough.

That said it isn't uncommon for Box velocities to be out by some margin in certain rifles.

Beg, borrow or sell a night with the missus to get hold of a chronograph for a day. you'll know exactly what your dealing with then.

Till you buy the next box...also that's precision hunter not the super performance load which is normally hotter than a two buck pistol

I've chrono'd that Precision Hunter 270 ammo at 2820 fps - about 100 fps less than the box, but in 22" barrel, a-bolt. Was quite a while ago so if powders have changed that might not be helpful.

So just how low does the dope say at 300y?it's probably still a backbone hold.dont aim off the meat.

The other possibility is the BC value you are using to calculate the drop is off? If the BC is lower than stated your velocity will not be accurate.

9.5” at 300y possibly just above the animal for the size deer I shoot haha don’t get me wrong it’s fit for purpose, I was just surprised it seemed slower than I was expecting. From others reply’s there is a few more factors I need to look into properly first before assuming the speed

Thanks for the reply’s, definitely some factors I hadn’t thought about.
Next step will be tracking down a chronograph and doing some more investigating. Unfortunately I lost my old phone along with my strelok pro app, turns out you can no longer download the app due to the war etc etc, abit of a shame considering I payed the $20 for it originally. And I can’t bring myself to pay $50 for applied ballistics just yet!
    Thanks guys

There is a chronograph available to forum members (one NI and one SI). Post a thread to find out where it is.

I put your info from above onto strelok and it gives the same result, it just drops like a stone (a really pointy, deathly one) after about 330 yards.

Have you got your distances in the same units? Using a yards solution and your range finder etc is in yards?

Its no secret that with two major conflicts occuring powder is scarce. Its possible the loads have changed slightly.

Most know that box velocities are based on test barrel lengths in a ballistic lab and that on average (over simplfying here) you lose 50fps per 28mm or inch of barrel length lost.

I tried some factory ammunition (not going to name the brand) through my Mod70 and it was slow compared to stated velocity, but the 2 dozen wallabies and 8 fallow all tipped over within 150m didn't seem to argue.

    YMMV
