Thread: .270 Projectiles Lagging Behind

Soon to take delivery of my first .270 and looking at available projectiles, the highest BC I can find is .536 for 145 ELD-X. That’s reasonable, but lags well behind the 6.5, 7 mm and heavier .30s. There can’t be any reason for this than underinvestment by manufacturers. Come on Hornady, Berger, Sierra etc, please try a bit harder for us .270 (and WSM) followers.

Any advice out there regarding other offerings (not LRABs).

How far are you trying to shoot stuff? All those projectiles (and plenty more) provide more than enough oomph when launched at 270 speeds for a very long way out.

The reason for the lower BC bullets is that the vast majority of 270's are 1 in 10 twist so anything more than 140gr is borderline to stableise

270 the new ‘best caliber’ !

Was playing round out at farm a couple of weeks ago, just verifying rangefinder and dial-ups, at varying distances..
So rangefinder values dialled in to my VX6 at 200, 300, and 400 yards were spot on. My mate then said that from the top of the terrace to the gong is 940 yds."See how good ya are"
I set up with the bipod, dialled in 940 yds, first shot missed so allowed a little more for windage, and proceeded to hit the gong (300 x 300) with the next 3 shots.
Nothing wrong with the .270 out to stupid distances, and this was with 145Gr ELD -X

The tested .591 BC is whats called a midrange or 200yd BC, most new bullets including the eld range are now publishing data from this testing to more accurately reflect the calibres they are shot from, they will usually also show a higher and lower number as a verified bc at a certain velocity. Most apps will allow you to enter all 3 numbers, the 150gr ablr I use(d) being .625 .569 and .531 which was bang on out to 900yds in my wsm

@Spitfire, why do you want to shoot a super high BC bullet ? If your rifle is for hunting then in all reality the 270 is a 400 metre gun to still have 1400 - 1500 FP energy at that range.
I have just started with the 140 AB in my 270. Since buying those I discovered that Nosler makes a 140 gr Partition. Very likely that bullet would be the best hunting 270 projectile there is.
If you go with a soft bullet like the ELD-X a lot of meat will be ruined and wasted. The balance is quick humane killing at all ranges combined with maximum meat recovery
Remember a lot of the new high BC offerings are made for WSM's and not 270 Win

I found the 140gn Nosler ABs (MV 3000 fps) to be good killers in my 270win. You've always got your 30cal and 7mm magnums if you want to shoot a loooong way.

I just fired the rest of my ladder up to 59.3 gr of SF with the 140 AB MV 2996 about an hour ago. Slight perimeter mark on case base, no heavy bolt but warming up.
What was your load for the AB's @Shearer. I have used AB's in a 2506 and found them hard to drive fast with their thick tough jackets, but they do work well, so here's hoping for the 270
