Amaxs/eldm are softer and thousands of deer get shot every year with them. I'm running factory 130 gr superformance ssts going fairly quick through mine for the mean time until I get around to developing a different load.
I am currently on my best streak, 16 deer for 16 shots, no misses or follow up shots. Furthest was just under 500 yards. Couple of big post rut red stags this year over 100 kg. No problems.
I also chest shot a big bodied red stag last week with the .223, made it about 15 yards before tipping over.
Pretty simple really, if it's soft or lacks grunt avoid the main shoulder bone. Soft bullets have their upsides, more damage and reliably opening up at low velocities are big plusses depending on the type of hunting you do.
    Shot placement is the key!
