Thread: 270WSM 130g sst vs the 145 eldx ?

Hi team, recently replaced my 270 win with a 270 wsm as I've always wanted 1.
I was shooting 145g eldx at 2950fps and getting 1/2 moa sized groups, more than acceptable imo.
However the 270 wsm came with load data for 130g sst's
I took them out the other day and they also shoot incredibly tight groups.
My question is with my 270win 145g eldx load I was confident from 100 yards out to 600 yards.
Will the sst's do the job ? Mostly deer, the odd pig, wallaby and hopefully at some stage a chamois.
The bulk of my hunting 95% is open tops deer hunting so want a load that will perform out to 600-700 yards.
If the sst will do that great they are cheaper and laser accurate in this rifle, or should I really be trying yo develop the 145 eldx ?


This was 3 shots at 100 yards with the sst's which I believe are traveling at 3023fps

I think you know the answer, go the the 145ELD-X with its higher BC if you want a 600yd load, the SST would probably be ok to 500 on a calm day, it’s bc is only .46

150 grn ABLR

the 130grn sst has reputation for being on the light side on bigger deer.....personaly I would stick with your 145s and buy a couple of sample packs of partitions...if they will group well for you ,well you could have your cake and eat it too....with chocolate frosting and sprinkles no less.

I used to use the 130sst and 130 ab. Both performed ok out to around 400. Didn't get many pass throughs though so changed to 150sst's. Large holes appeared in the off side of deer and they never moved from the spot. I'd go 145eldx or 150sst. The point of a magnum is to launch the heavier weight projectiles at the same sort of speeds as the non magnum equivalent does the lighter ones so use it for what it's designed for. You should be around 3200-3250 with 130's in a 270wsm. 3023 is standard 270 speeds if barrels are around 24". You haven't gained anything over what you had other than maybe accuracy? I could never get the 3300 like the 270wsm was sposed to and the factory fed with 130bt's gave a sticky bolt lift. Happy with the 3250 I was getting and .75 groups from a standard t3 using rl22. More new powders about to try now. Think I was getting around 3000 with the 150's and stopped as it was a great load. Great caliber and hope you get the best out of it.

Yup was worried on them being too light and a reputation for being a bit of a mincer up close say 100 yards

Yeah I think I read the load data wrong the guy had shocking hand writing the 130 sst look to be doing 3200 I haven't chronoed them just going of the scribble in the load book, I thought 3023 was a bit slow for 67grains of 2213sc
I think I'll give the 145 eldx a go in front of some rl19 and see if I can work them up around 3100 and accurate

A friend uses 130 accubonds as his go to load in the 270wsm. Regularly kills animals at 300yds. I used it to shoot a hind at 500yds with it. It was probably about the limit of performance though.
He has worked up a load for 150gr LRAB but has never used them.

The .270 Wizzem will throw that 145gr ELD-X at 3100 no problem Danny. Neighbour who's on here from time to time (but I've forgotten his username) uses this combo, helped him cut up two medium Kaimai reds shot off farmland last spring, both at a good half a click. Pinned them both through the high shoulders, both shoulder blades broken, half inch or so exits, very clean killing. Didn't see the gralloch but understand both animals were instant collapses which you'd expect with that point of impact. Will see if I can put you in touch with him.

I hate SSTs with a passion, seen and heard too many horror stories to bother using them, especially the 130, if I were to use them I would much prefer heavy and slow than light and fast. The 145 ELD load for my wsm pushes them along at 3300fps but I'm having a bit of a reloading holiday at the moment and found my wsm shoots the Norma factory stuff really well, 150gr Oryx going 3100, pretty slow compared to what I could get hand loading but it shoots them like a laser and they are an awesome projectile

Go with what you know, 145 ELD X all the way, should be a super killing load out far, so long as the rifle likes them.

Use to run 150gn Bergers on everything from hares to deer. Even out pass 700m without too much trouble. Ran around the 3080fps if I recall correctly.

Hi @dannyb any chance you can give me the specs for your 145 eldx load and rifle specs please. Just threw my new load of 130 SST in the 270win over a lab radar and a book max of 2213sc is giving me 2930fps. So a bit anemic...

@paddygonebush try some Superformance works very good with the 145 ELD X in my 270 Win, I load using 2213 SC max data, start lower and work up, my load with the 145 ELD X is over 3100 fps (270 WSM country) Has worked well for me in a Tikka T3.
