    280 AI loads

Hi ya'll. Been doing some development on my 280 AI. Have worked up some loads and got to 55gn 2209 (half gn over adi book max), 150gn LRAB's. Speeds a bit slow at 2830fps but shooting really well. The fallow at 325 didn't seem to care too much . Anyone care to share their loads or experiences ( its a Tikka 22"barrel and 9.5" twist). Will be fun to have a tinker with. Cheers

One of my mates loads 280AI, with 162 amax and 150 ttsx, I'm sure he'll be happy to share info.

Speeds not everything (says the man with a slow load! )

I'm currently shooting 162 amaxs at a very low 2750fps using imr7828. Furthest shot with that load was 399yds and a very dead deer. I've the same pill going 2930fps with ar2209 but ran out and havent bothered to get more as I have other powders to burn through. using Vihtivouri n550 ive had 140gr accubonds going 3200fps and 150gr BTips going 3150fps. All sub moa loads. Waiting on some eld-x to turn up in the post.

    Thanks guys for the replies.

    Will pm chainsaw.

Started with 2209 as that's what I had in the cab. Totally agree that speeds not everything and pleased that got a good starter, but can always be betterer. Will try a 162/168gr projectile and possibly a powder change. Impressed how nice the 280 is to shoot. When are the eld's supposed to be available??

    Thx, M

With the 162 Amax he runs 59 grains 2213sc in the nosler brass. Only 58 in the lapua brass, for 2890 in the Nosler, and hasn't chrony'd in the Lapua but expects about 2850.

7828ssc gave higher velocity but not as accurate.

    Barrel length?
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

barrel length is very important to get best velocity and benefit from 280AI. I'm running RL22 w 162AMAX in 24in bbl and getting 2850 fps at the accuracy sweet spot (0.3moa). Went up in load dev significantly above that (up to 2950 fps from memory) but groups opened up. 2850 fps gets me to 800 yrds for ethical impact velocities , which is more than I need in most situations.
RL22 is just about as hard to get as RL17 at the moment ... but the new temp stable version RL23 is available in some Sth Is stores. ADI2217 would also be good alternative.

Thanks for all the info. Really helpful. Keep em coming. Will report back with some results in next few weeks.

On an aside had gunworks do the machining and really happy with their work. Also Darren at Dpt. While he sold me the suppressor he recommended gunworks do all the work to save on logistics.
