    280 rem?

im not sure im in the right catagory but here goes, iv got a 7mm08 and since i cant go 5 minutes without frigging with my rifle iv been looking at ways to up the grunt from my rifle.

is it as easy as getting my chamber reamed to make it a 280 rem? i know its based on a 30-06 case which if im not mistaken has the same case diameter as a 308, 7mm08, so my extractor should still work. my rifle is a single shot so no need to worry about mag.

    cheers

You will have to look at your action length. The 30-06 case is much longer than a 7mm08.
Most 7mm08 are medium action and 270, 280 and 30-06 are long action.

It is that simple, ream it, headspace and done. But unless you have a "proper length" barrel, don't bother.

what do you mean by a proper length barrel? as in a 22' or 24' to make use of the extra powder? or along those lines

24", otherwise the only gain you get is recoil and noise.

its a break barrel single shot so no action. just needs the bottom of the shell to be the same to match the extractor. cheers

As long as there is enough meat in the chamber area of the barrel and you have enough barrel length to use the extra powder then it should be pretty straight forward.

I had both a sako & a tikka in 280 rem with the latter being a tikka in 7mm08 reamed out to 280 rem.

Lately a mate & I bought another tikka in 7mm08 & teamed it out to a 284 Winchester & cut the barrel down to 16 inches.

This has proven to be an awesome lightweight setup & I would recommend you think about reaming your current rifle to a 284 as you can use a shorter barrel as opposed to needing a longer barrel for a 280

As the 280 and 284 have the same bore diameter and powder capacity (280 slightly more) why would the 284 work better with a shorter barrel?

Fatter powder column? Only musings but the shorter fatter cartridges seem to do better out of shorter barrel lengths right?

Mostly to do with powder capacity/bore volume ratio I thought.
ie 308 better than 7mm08, better than 243 etc when you shorten a barrel.
    I may be wrong.
    What do others think?

Quickload reckons that at the same max pressure a .280 and a .284 basically do the exact same speed from an 18 inch barrel, with the .280 using like 2 more grains of powder to do it

A 308 case is slightly fatter than a 30 06 case so you can't just ream it out. Not sure if this is the same with 708 and 280.
