    280 ross musings

After reading (and responding to) a couple of threads the dreaded brain gears have started turning.
My father has a 280 Ross straight pull. I do know these are a right PITA to load for now. There is nothing easy to make another case out of it.
BUT the talk of the new Nosler cartridges (based on a 404 case?) maybe as close as it gets.
Nothing seems to have the right rim as the ross is .556" but even the current method of sizing and turning the belts off 300 H+H magnums have the same issue-300 and the Nosler both .534". Case length identical to the Nosler at 2.590"
I realise that this is also possible from 375 Ruger cases but this seems a bit easier.
I checked the 28 Nosler dimensions but the case is bigger, Id imagine so you couldn't put it in the smaller jobbie.
This begs the question that apart from the massive taper of the 280 ross, maybe the 28 Nosler is the modern day high pressure equivalent, a couple of thou difference from the odd ball 280 (.287") not withstanding.
I will probably never get this rifle as my own but maybe a thing just in case? It would be one of the few rifles I'd have that would be pretty much mandatory to reload to shoot it.

The 28 Nolser is a bit more than a 280 Ross. A 28 Nolser is not far behind the 7 RUM in performance. A 280 Ross is similar to a 280 Rem in performance, Taylor in African Rifles and Cartridges states a 280 Ross shoots a 140gr at 2900 fps.

@stug yup agree that's what I meant. The ross is only saami rated to 48000psi. Its close to a 7mm rem mag.
The 28 nosler is today what the 280 ross was 110 years ago.
    Double Shot likes this.

Off subject somewhat, didn’t Eddie Herrick have a 280 Ross ?
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Yep and the first Wapiti shot was with a 280 Ross at about 400 yards from memory. Lake Katherine or something like that.

They aren't very common, even here in Canada, were they were originally made and designed. Pretty checkered performance history.
I've never seen one, but would like to put a few shots, threw one, if I ever get the chance,

Aint common here either and from my readings there were a lot more of the Ross straight pulls done in 303 brit.

The Ross rifle was originally designed in Scotland, but made in Canada, yes. All of the military ones were made in .303, the .280 Ross ones were only manufactured for the civilian market. I’d love to own a 1907 Scotch Deer Stalker Pattern .280, but they’re like rocking horse shit.
