Thread: 280 ross musings

After reading (and responding to) a couple of threads the dreaded brain gears have started turning.
My father has a 280 Ross straight pull. I do know these are a right PITA to load for now. There is nothing easy to make another case out of it.
BUT the talk of the new Nosler cartridges (based on a 404 case?) maybe as close as it gets.
Nothing seems to have the right rim as the ross is .556" but even the current method of sizing and turning the belts off 300 H+H magnums have the same issue-300 and the Nosler both .534". Case length identical to the Nosler at 2.590"
I realise that this is also possible from 375 Ruger cases but this seems a bit easier.
I checked the 28 Nosler dimensions but the case is bigger, Id imagine so you couldn't put it in the smaller jobbie.
This begs the question that apart from the massive taper of the 280 ross, maybe the 28 Nosler is the modern day high pressure equivalent, a couple of thou difference from the odd ball 280 (.287") not withstanding.
I will probably never get this rifle as my own but maybe a thing just in case? It would be one of the few rifles I'd have that would be pretty much mandatory to reload to shoot it.
