280AI Neck and Shoulder bump die v FL sizing die

I need to purchase a set of dies for my 280AI

I already have a neck sizing only die and was thinking of getting a shoulder bump die to deal with the shoulder when the need arises.

My question is am I going to need a FL die at some point regardless of having a bump die.

Specifically will the brass diameter around the shoulder become an issue at some point if the bump die is just pushing the shoulder back?

What is it you're hoping to achieve by using a neck sizing die?

Why not just buy a die set that has a full length die in it and set that up to bump the shoulder 2thou as per the advice of many experienced shooters/reloaders? By setting it to size the bare minimum and use it every time you size your brass you achieve maximum consistency.

I already have a 7mm neck sizing die. By not using a FL die with the 40 deg shoulder, brass work hardening and trimming should (in theory) be reduced.

I will need to bump shoulders occasionally, wasn't sure about the diameter of the case at the shoulder, turns out a bump die will do that as well so all good.

Yes, the body or shoulder die will do same as FL die for body & shoulder, but won’t size neck or decap primers

Keep in mind that there is a variance between the 280 Ackley Improved and the '280AI' Nosler SAAMI.

I'd also look at a 30-06 body die just in case.

No I dont think so.. https://gunsmithtalk.wordpress.com/2...eadspace-test/

You cant use a 3006 body die for a 280ai.

@7mm tragic I would forget the neck sizing and just use a FL die. Neck sizing then bumping shoulder with a body die creates another step in the process you dont need. Improved cases with minium taper will benefit from FL over neck sizing.

I would Just get a full length resizing die set, get a bushing full length die if you wanna play with neck tension for specific brass thickness, or use an expander die after fully resizing. To me, Neck sizing and body sizing separately is just wasting time.
