    280AI Revisited - Forbes - Load Development

Getting this set up today with scope and bipod rail fitted.

Looking forward to running some 162s ELDMs and RE26.

God damn that front stud is a PITA. Mine flogged out in the stock so I had to do the same as you have done. The honeycomb in the forend was not centered at the stud so I ended up making a larger aluminium insert and epoxy glued it in, filling the voids. Being a bedded barrel also made it harder.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

Yep it is! The Montana stock is too with a foam inner. The Forbes is just a void. I did the best I could - I used a spare bolt half inserted into the keeper to locate it in the stock so I could easily get the securing bolts seated.

Just an observation (in case the original photo led folk to think otherwise) is that alignment should be confirmed at two positions, and not with a single placement. The diagram at the side shows how misalignment could still be possible if checked at only one position. Best results are with the tools set as far forward as the rings allow, and then as far back. The rings are only positioned correctly when alignment occurs at both positions.
Somewhere else on the Forum was a thread for posting home-made reloading and related tools, and these would be a valuable addition if not there already. They make for a simple home project for anyone who can get half–an–hour's access to a lathe, and are really effective — more so than using a single bar. 25.4mm and 30mm diameter will be off–the–shelf, but 34mm will have to be turned down as part of the project I imagine.

    Nice.

    I have a 280 AI that I built on a Sako L61R action with a Douglas barrel 24".

It shoots very well. I have a great load with Nosler Accubond 160 gr over N560. I get 3000 fps which is the Nosler book load.

It is on Buy Sell. Please PM me for photos etc.

Can do that with a half decent laser and some farting about too. Or a... Well there's many ways to skin the cat on this one.

One very simple way, ( found by an Australian I believe!), is revert your two pins so that actually the flats are facing each other’s , it will tell you straight away if there is a mis alignement and if the rings are on the same plane or not.
It works better with a perfect flat face rather than with a slight chamfer.
