    284 Win barrel length/projectiles

I'm thinking of having a shorter barreled 284 Win.
I thought I'd ask the community what barrel lengths they have and what projectile/grain suits it.
How short can it actually go in order to get the right amount of powder burn etc etc, and perform.

    Thanks!

I run 20in and 22in with 162 AMAX or 160gn TMKs for medium to longer range and 145gn Speer HC or 140gn AB for bush load. This covers everything out to 7-800 yards. Would do the same if it was 18in bbl. 150ELDx is pretty good all rounder but probably a bit frangibke for really close stuff. Drilled a stag thru both shoulders at 125 yds with ELDX this roar, pill - well actually just the jacket and base - resting against skin on the off side. Complete jacket separation. Have toyed with idea of running really big pills like 180 VLDs or 180 ELDMs with the idea they might be “one pill does everything” but have not had time to pursue that

Do you use the 162 in your 22inch version, and thr 145 in your 20inch version? What powder do you use for those mate?
I'm thinking along the same lines as just having the one calibre and reloading components

Went down to 19" with my old one. Ran 162eldms and 150SGKs with 2209 and 145 speer hcsp with 2208. @stagstalker ran a shorter barrel with great success and so did @Seventenths . If you Google 284 superpig you should be able to find a really good article of the build etc on this forum or the old one

    I run 162 AMAX or 160 TMKs in both 20 & 22in bbls. And the 145 Speer in 22in and 140 ABs in 20.
Use RL17 or Superformance powders. 2209 is also an option but does not quite have the same velocity outcome.
Get 2930 fps with RL17 in 22in bbl with AMAX and 2830fps with TMKs running Superformance in 20in bbl.
    150ELDx with RL17 in 20in bbl at 2910fps

Stagstalkers was 17" and ran 162eldms @ 2600. I reckon a 140gr or 150gr SGK behind a good dose of 2209/re17 and you are are smashing stuff up close and out a reasonable distance. I ran the 150sgks @2700~ and shot a red hind at 460yds, she went down like a sack of spuds.

18-20inch to get full performance in my opinion

    My Tikka 284 is 20inch and will drive 162s at 2700 with win760 and 2800 with RE16. I have also loaded 140 BTS at 3000 with RE16.

For one load to do it all the 150BT or 150ELDX might be ideal

I’m running a 16inch barrel ran the 150 SGK for quite a while and it went well have now settled on the 150 eld-x for everything and they are killing well.

Not going super quick around 2600 but plenty for what I’m using it for.

@GWH is a good one to talk to about 284s as well. Has a short one and a long one. Got the 180eldms going really well out of the long one and he is why I tried 150sgks in my one as he spoke so highly of them

I have a 26inch 284, and it shoots quote a few things really well. Hence my thoughts about having a short one also. I'll send him message

1000yds is fun, 1500yds is getting interesting, 2000yds is exciting, 2500yds will blow your mind

Have built or owned 3. One bought = Weatherby Mk5 Ultralite that was 7-08 rechambered to 284. A Tikka 270 rebarelled with new bbl in 284. And a REM700 270 fitted with barrel off REM model 7 that was 7-08 rechambered to 284.... bit of a “Frankenstein”. All have proven accurate and reliable
