    30-30 Sabot round

In my cartridge collection I have a 30-30 sabot round.

For those not in the know they are a 223cal (approx) projectile sleeved inside a plastic ‘fingered’ sleeve and fitted into a larger calibre case, the idea being you had a high velocity projectile coming out of an average velocity rifle.

They must have been a ‘fad’ back in the 70’s (?) and I guess they weren’t a success judging by the fact I don’t see them for sale any more.

Anybody else remember them or know why they disappeared?

    now banned ammo btw.
what you have is probably a remington "accelerator" round. accuracy could be an issue, i used to load quite a few for 308, we were shooting them out of a barnard target rifle, never did figure out the highest speed achieved as the chrono only went up to 5000 fps

They were called the .22 Accelerator, made by Remington. Just seen them mentioned occasionally. Interesting concept, just like some artillery cartridges I suppose.

Loaded some in a 30-06 managed to shoot an unlucky hare with one.
But found them in my rifle to be inaccurate.
Impressed the rellys with their .22s though.
Mind you I used NBTs to shoot rabbits for practice and they were accurate.

As mentioned above its now prohibited ammo.
COLFO are currently in court over non compensation for prohbitied ammo.

The govt refused to compensate for private property. As required in our bill of rights if private property is taken for public use. The govt says its to make the public safer. Thus public use.

Im waiting to see what happens.

Re above: how many people have been murdered (or even just shot) by somebody using a sabot round?

Yeah, "says" its to make the public safer

Yet how many civis are walking around in their body armor just encase?

Hopefully no one tells them 22-250 or equivalent achieves similar velocity results.

I disagree that they are now prohibited ammo.

The original OIC does say discarding-saboted ammunition, but the accompanying description, which is part of the actual law, says "Small-diameter projectiles designed to pierce armour...". A soft point 223 projectile is not designed to pierce armour.

i also disagree with mild steel milsurplus rounds being prohibited. As its not hardened nor intend to be armor penetrating. Hopefully it all gets sorted out.
Nash said govt shouldn't pay for ammo because its not significant capital outlay. What a load of shit. Our bill of rights dosnt say if the govt thinks its not worth much they dont have to pay for for it.

you could still buy the plastic sabot bit as a component a couple of years ago...they got used in all manner of .308 cal cartridges...the wee x39mm cartridge poked out impressive figures using them too....if gnash thinks they good for assignation he has watched "shooter" movie or read "point of impact" book too many times......
