    300 Win Mag thoughts...

I have been thinking a bit about getting a 300WinMag lately as a longer range steel target rifle. I may have the opportunity to do some reloading for one coming up in a month or two and was after some advice on projectiles and powders to use. I would highly doubt I would use the rifle for hunting and so target projectiles will suit me fine.

After doing some reading R22 or AR2213SC seems like good powders to start with. Any suggestions for an easily obtainable, temperature stable powder for use with heavy projectiles in a .300WinMag?

What about long range projectiles to suit a .300WinMag with a 1:10" twist barrel? I was thinking the Sierra 210gr HPBT MatchKing or the Berger 210gr Hybrid. Thoughts?

    Cheers very much!

I use ADI 2217 powder with 215hybrids as well as the 208 amax. AR2213SC may be a bit quick and R22 will get you better velocity but isn't very temp stable. I would use the 215hybrid over the 210VLD as they are more forgiving to seating depth, or go with the new hornadys.

I use AR2217 with a Berger 210gr Hunting VLD in Norma Brass 26" Barrel.

AR2225 is also a very good powder but I got slightly better velocity and accuracy from AR2217.

Thanks guys, hopefully i have some 2217 at home!

257weatherby, not many rifle manufacturers making the type of rifle i want for the longer range steel events in 300 weatherby. Same question could be asked about why not 7mm, .338, .375, or .416...

Why 300WM, have you considered say 7mm Rem Mag with 175's or 180's? Slight BC advantage and less recoil, whats not to like.

I'm loading 180gn SSTs for a 300WM Sako A7 to fit the mag.
Could have gone for A-Maxes, but owner wanted mag fed, not single feed.

Hi GWH, can you point me at a factory rifle in 7mmRemMag really suitable for the longer range steel competitions... If i was looking at a custom rifle then yes the 7mmRemMag, and a whole host of other calibers come into play but at this stage i am thinking to stay with a factory rifle.

Looking at the TRG, AI, SSG08 type factory rifles. Accurate reliable, magazine fed, adjustable, etc... only problem is barrel length in a couple of cases but they tick most of the boxes.

Could probably achieve the same output with a custom rifle for similar or a bit less cost, i know.

well if the cost will be similar or less for a custom then why not go that way and have the option of calibre?

Meh. Don't buy something thinking about the next owner.
I mean if your a serial rifle swapper maybe (buzzman hah)
Besides, if you go custom and get everything you want why would you sell?
