Having a discussion with the father in law comparing a 7RM to 300wm, what speeds can a 178 amax or 208 be pushed by a standard hunting length 300 win mag
I have a Tikka 300 Win Mag and use the Noslar 180 gr Ballistic Tip and Accubond, both run at 2960 fps out of the 24 inch barrel. I would suspect the 178 gr would be very similar. As for the 208 gr bullet I don't use that in the win Mag but my 300 Rum. It moves them at 3180 fps. In the 300 Win Mag you should be able to get around the 2800 fps with the 208 gr with a bit of experimenting with different powder combo's. The 208 gr bullet would be to long for the Tikka magazine as the 180gr Noslars are border line for magazine fit and they are shorter than the 208gr's.
I'm getting 2880fps with the 215 bergers which will give similar velocities to the 208 amax just a fraction slower. Thats with 77.7 grains of 2217 and a 26inch barrel. With a 24inch barrel id guess somewhere between 2750 and 2850fps for the 208's
