300 wsm long range target and hunting pills

    Hi fellas
Total novice but keen to learn
Im currently shooting a suppressed T3 approx 12 to 13 years old with an estimated 350 to 400 rnds through it. Currently dressed with a VX3 6.5x20x40 long range scope with varmint reticle.
i seldom miss what i'm shooting at however i don't think i will be going to the olympics any time soon lol unfortunately my budget doesn't allow me buy or build a nice custom toy so the T3 is all i have to work with. But i will work on putting a new 20 moa rail on asap..
my question to you fellas is if I want to shoot out to 1000m and also want to hunt to say 500m to 600m is there any recommended projectiles and or loads i can start developing????
    PS.... currently using RL-17
    cheers

178 eld or heavier. Maybe even a 208 amax or 215 Berger. You really need the high BC to get further out there. Sorry can't help with loads. You will probably need to single feed too.

    Im running 215 bergers @ 2760 with R26 in my T3.
Modify your mag so you dont have any COL restrictions.

Hey @wsm junkie, does your Tikka have the factory 1:11" barrel or an re-barrel with a faster twist?

Curious cos when I looked at the T3x 300WSM I came up against a twist limitation on the length /weight of bullet it would shoot with good stability, if I remember correctly it was only just able to deal with the 200gr ELD-X?

Yes, modified a T3 SM mag.
Tried to use a LA mag but found it would only feed top round and next one down would bind to the walls because its narrower than the SM one.
Also if you modify your mag to take the longer round you'll need a long action bolt stop.

@Flyblown its a 1-10 proof research carbon jobbie.
I've read on US forums of guys running the 215's in factory Tikka 1-11's with no issues but then others couldnt....i was told 162 amaxes wouldnt work in my 9.5 twist 7mm08 but they worked fine out to 600yds....guess you dont know untill you try it.

    Thanks @wsm junkie.

There's no reason that I can think of for those 162gr AMax not to work in a 1:9.5" twist 7mm-08.

But the 215gr Bergers are well below the stability threshold in a 1:11" 300 WSM, so personally I wouldn't waste the dollars on trying them. Each to their own I guess.

@HWWSM that's your limitation with your stock Tikka, the barrel twist. I wouldn't worry about though as you'll still be able to shoot some good quality high BC bullets, just use the stability calculators to see what's a non-starter, what's marginal and what's a guaranteed good outcome. Even if a bullet calculates as stable, your rifle might not like it, and as WSMJ says sometimes a rifle will shoot a marginally stable bullet just fine. I've never really had that much success with bullets that are a little too long for the twist, so tend to not bother.

A lot of guys including myself shooting the ELD-M 208 gr out of exact same setup, getting 2770 fps with 2213sc. Grab a few and have a go. I'm only just over mag length but happy to single feed, I could go deeper into case and fit mag but not to worried.

    The 210gr Berger’s are 1/11 twist

Also litz / Berger have a stability calculator here : https://bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/
that will tell you stability and adjusted b.c of any projectile with your barrel

Has anyone used the 212 gr ELD X in there 300 WSM. Beeman's son is getting one in Rem 700 soon ( on order) and is keen to use this bullet. Any suggestions for powder etc.
He is also thinking of the extended mag box so he can mag feed. What would be an expected velocity with this load/ bullet combo?
I have heard R 26 and 17 are good but 26 is hard to get at the moment, AR 2213 SC sounds ok so was thinking maybe Superformance would be good as it's not as bulky so shouldn't be as compressed as some powders.

I use the 200gr ELD X with 61.5gr RL17. Just loaded up 90 rnds after initial testing. Looking forward to using them on animals. With that load getting 2945 fps.
