Here's a blast from the past that I picked up recently. Built on a p14 action in a bsa stock. All in good condition. It has a 26inch barrel with a 1in 12 twist. I'm waiting for some dies to arrive to shoot it. Wondering if the cartridge is suitable for trimming the barrel to 18 inches or if 20 would be better.
Anyone shooting one of these aussie legends?

Yeah, its built for 87gr with the 12 twist barrel though have read that the short 100gr go ok as well.

It's an intresting cartidge designed for roo shooting. Mate had one for a few years roughly the same performance as 257Roberts. Most of the load data comes from Nick Harvey.

    What's your project smiffy?
Walker, do you if your mate shot 100gr in it?
I guess first edition nick harvey manual would be the go. Other users had recommended using the higher end of 250 savage or lower 257 bob data.

leave it long.....velocity is your friend...if you want a short range rifle buy an old .303brit.... at least untill you find out what she will do as it is.....

When you have a fired case from the rifle fill it with water and weight it (make sure you strike the neck off level) and give me the case length and COAL you're working to and I'll run it in Quickload for you. I had one (based on SMLE) some years ago but it wasn't accurate enough to be interesting. Your one looks as if it might shoot a lot better. Once the quickload data is in thats the time to see how trimming the barrel would change things.

Cool, thanks. I have a feeling it will suffer like a 243 if lopped too short. I'm saying that I only need it out to 150 200m max and it weighs 8 1/2lb as is

weight is a pain to carry but good for everything else.... you might be able to get away with only 3 baffles with a DPT and still be comfortable without being silly long. maybe all 5 for range work but if shoots to same POI take 2 out for bush work (Im happy enough to hunt bush bare barrel if its too thick).

    Yeah, thanks
MD..I'm thinking 20inches bare might be good. Will take up tentmans offer of the quickload projection as well.

Looks like a rebarreled BSA Model E. They did a few of these in Aussie.
