Once I take the top finish off there is apparently a trick to use denatured alcohol (whatever that is in NZ) on the wood and that gives you a hint at the woods colour.
It did show some colour when I drilled into it for the dowels and recoil pins just didn't want to have to sand heaps off it to get there.
Im thinking a hint of red maybe, there was a shotgun a guy had restored on the forum and that looked sweet but it was the natural colour.
Still to be decided really

Shot the rifle today and was all over an a4 page at 100m. These were with 100gr. Going to try some 87gr which its designed for with a 12 twist. I'm not hopeful though would like to be surprised.
Spent the rest of the range time shooting mint groups with my winnies.

old 30s were really bad if one of action screws wasnt correctly tensioned.....someone will remember which and how tight....might be nothing but might just be the fly in your ointment. also have you double checked scope mounts AND BASES as the buggers can come loose and cause all sorts of random shite before you find out what issue was.

Good points nd. I haven't taken off or checked bases. I will play with the action screws. My Ruger is a bit special in that regard.
