They are real grunty blanks, used to propel old school rifle grenades from the muzzle of your SMLE. A metal cup fixes onto the muzzle, and you slide into it a hand grenade with a circular base fitted to it. The gasses push on the base and launch the hand grenade. Get a hundred or so meters out of them.

I have got a bunch of those as well. I dumped them in a box and now I use the old tin for carrying .223's around in my pack. Couldn''t tell you where I got them. Dont remember being in the war.
