    308 ammo

Looking at shouting a mate some ammo for his 308 for a little job. Was going to do some beersies but thought i might do him a solid and go extra.
    let me explain.
Got himself the 308 a while back from GC. Very much a newbie. Shot first deer the other day. Very happy. Asked him what ammo he used after he said he got a hundred. His comment was the cheapest they had. Had a feeling and i was right. Showed me and they are all the FMJ military.
I have suggested he at a minimum he flat point some and shoot them into something for comparison, but should really get some proper soft points.
Anyhoo, whats a good basic packet i can get him?
Fed blue box, Belmont, Maybe even some Privi? The little job he is hopefully going to do isn't an 80 dolleroo job so didn't really want to go too steep.
Already made a comment that he has 80 bullets left and will have to resight the rifle but has sort of begrudgingly admitted its the right thing to do.
Stuff he has now is doing 2" plus groups at a hundy and I've told him that he will probably do a lot better with the sporting stuff.

Fed blue box 150s always went well for me, and belmont 130gr hollow points are super accurate in every 308 I have tried them in however they are a light frangible projectile so a little thought into shot placement is advised compared to most 308 ammo.

be nice if the cop shop 500m from my door could help but the front desk isnt manned. Have to travel to central for mail order stuff.
Puts me off doing any mail order gun stuff

I’m going to ask my preferred LGS to see if they will get some Belmont in for me. Happy to pay a courier and handling fee. Try to do most (of what little business I do) through him.

They used to do packs made up of 5 rounds each from a few different brands so you could see what grouped better for your rifle. Seen them on trademe a while ago, don't know if they still do them though

Winchester 150gn soft points are usually pretty cheap. Shoot straight in every .308 I’ve put them through.
Killed every animal I’ve pointed them at.

when i was shopping around for factory 270 win ammo in south island , i went to the big shops but ended up goin thru Eilios in dunedin as he would do a lil discount if ya bought a few packs, the 270/308 was similiar price from memory an i ended up going with the hornady whitetail line they had common in nz, the bonus is you end up with hornady brass which is good to reload down the track...

i give a mate who shoots fuck all a few pack of rem corelokt 150 308s after i sight in his rifle now and then , in the agreement i get all of the brass he can collect.. simple FLS an i have bulk 7-08 brass an he gets a bitta meat or set of horns for his own efforts.

some shops do 5 boxes for fixed price,
good on ya for doin a solid smuffy. hope ya well cob

@csmiffy I use some Freedom ammo in my one. I have a few packets here so if he wanted to buy one or two for what they will cost me to replace, then thats all good. I also found Partisan and Sellior and Bellot work well in mine. The PPU partisan is probably a good option, or Barnaul if price is more important. Not sure on the availability of the Barnaul at the moment, but try https://www.barnaul.co.nz/prices-buy/price-lists these guys.

@timattalon sounds like a good deal Tim.
Obviously goes ok. Reman ammo, what projectiles do they use? Pm me for price
Price is only an option because im a tight arse. Mind you from his comments, if it is to pricey he wont want to get the next packet either

@csmiffy has he considered pulling the FMJ projectiles and replacing them with SP? Can usually find someone who will buy cheap FMJs off setting the purchase of the SP.....I did that with some 7.62x39 when I picked up some FMJ cheap...

PM me or I will see if I can find your cell number. To be honest, the Barnaul could well be worth trying as a start because if it groups in his rifle then it is cheap to shoot....I dont think I have any left but GC might....
