I’ve just acquired my first ever .308. What’s a good deer killing bullet and any pet loads appreciated. Not been used for any long range. 200yd zero.
Cheers

168gn eldm's have been very successful I my 22" Lupo over a mild load of 2208 have to check my charge weight again but its only a mild load at 2622fps, super accurate, super easy to get shooting sub moa and super effective on red skins.
Apparently 178gn eldx are even better at pedestrian speed out further, if that's your thing, I haven't felt the need to change from 168s though.
2206H is the can't-go-wrong powder.
150g Nosler Ballistic Tip @2900 fps gives
1000 ftlbs of energy at 635 yards

Or 150g Gameking at any velocity you want
Winchester brass has more internal capacity and allows a bit more FPS
Lapua brass handles more pressure and allows a bit more fps
Big Big bodied stags of any type succumb to a well placed 30 cal projectile
It my fav for Sambar
I use 150gr Nosler BT and performance has been great.
I've always had great accuracy and good terminal performance from Hornday SPs, both 150gr and 165gr, these are super cheap.
About to start loading the 150gr BT in my 16" 308 using 2206h as my all-rounder. Hoping for 2700fps.
I had a very good using the 140gr in my 7/08.
Depending on barrel length, I would look at the 168/178 ELD-M for a short barrel 2500-2600mv or the 150gn Nosler BT if you are running them faster (2700fps+). They have both worked for me out to 300 yards.
Current load with the 168 ELD-M is 42gns 2208 for 2500mv 16"bbl.
My shortest 308 is 15 inch and the 150 BT is doing 2730 fps

How many have you shot with that load @dannyb?
Less than 200y your wasting your money on anything with a plastic tip, get some 150gr interloc or 150g game kings and live happily ever after.
Ok. So 4 or 5 with the Lupo since the spiker you shot in the roar? You must have been finding some time to get out.:D
your a bush hobbit more often then not??? try a box of bog std winchester powerpoint in 180grn and come back and tell us how you got on....
they are quiet simply put,the ducks nuts....and the recoil FEELS less than the same in 150grn. if you want to duplicate the terminal preformance, hornady make an awesome 180grn sp...I used the round nose version and couldnt fault it on game.
Greetings @Nathan F,
It is hard to find anything that does not work in the 150 to 165 grain range. Use what shoots well.
GPM.
As everyone has said, 150gr -165gr hunting projectile on top of 2206H or 2208 and job done. Very boring really!
Thanks for the reply’s. Food for thought. I load other calibres with2206h and 2208 so might try some bt’s and eldx’s. Might take md’s advice and start out with a couple of box’s of power point then reload from there
What's the new rifle @Nathan F ?
thats never a good feeling....you cant feel happy and sad at same time..it just feels somehow wrong.
2206h 168 amax cheap dead deer I use Winchester brass fed 210s 42gns for a reduces load for kids
150GR 1nterlocks are great and cheap to buy they group well and kill red skins & Sika well, 2206 is better for 150GR down I use 2208 it is probably better for 168GR and up. 1 load amax 168GR with 45GR 2208 with good results but both 2206 & 2208 work well and you can use both for other calibers as well, so universal to have in your reloading setup if other powders get hard to find.
I use 165g Sierra TGK put of my 308. 2206H is the powder. 2648fps 18in barrel. My go to and will probably stay with them. 30 - 400mtrs is the range I have shot deer with these.
Remington corelokt and 2208. No need to get fancy.
If your 308 of choice is cleaning up animals at decent distances then fancy is what you need to be……

165gr boat tail Interlock has never given me any issues at all. I'm loading it on 2208, but as others have said 2206h is a good option as well in that weight.
@7mmsaum nice looking spot:cool:
Running 165gr interlock with 2208 for close range out to 200ish and 200-500 168grain A-Max.
and this is why folks have 2 loads...something cheap n chearful or blunt and potent for up close and a whatever tickles fancy for out long....99% of times you want to shoot out long you will have time to slip a few rounds out of top pocket.
Or just run somthing that works for both  each to their own I guess, if purely sticking to inside 250y the cheap and cheerful soft points, interlocks etc will be more than sufficient, I run the 168gn eldm's as at 308win velocities it'll do near to far without any drama.
I’m running 150 SST with 2206H, very accurate, 3 shots off a good rest generally keyhole.
Haven’t shot beyond 400M, closest 15M. All drop instantly like a sack of shit.
I also carry a spare mag of the Hornady Sub-X I think 190g with a dose of Trail Boss, if there are goats in the area. (Marlborough)
Bloody awesome, you can smoke a herd of goats without disturbing anything even nearby.
I use Nosler 150gr BT's in my 18" 308 work awesome (factory ammo), would have got 165gr or 180gr if store had any at the time.
I normally carry 2 or 3 loose 180gr winchester suppressed rounds so i can single load a quiet finishers if animals is still kicking
Barnes 130gr, 2206H getting 3000ft/s out of 18 inch barrel. Kills very well.
