    .308 loads

A buddy of mine has just bought a heavy barreled AR-10 for long range shooting, I understand the twist rate is 1/10, can anyone recommend a good projectile, maybe around the 168-175 grain weight? I don't have much experience with heavier bullets for .308, as mine has a 1/14 twist I have been using Nosler Custom Competition 155 grain HPBTs (they are great).

Tobes, do you mean LR killing as in varmint style blow up or hunt to eat with minimal meat damage ?

IMHO the amax is a glorified target projectile

Out of a 308 win there is very little if any advantages to be had in effective range on game between 168-178-208 amax, windage and impact velocity are all similar at around 700y its only when you push out to the limits of the calibres target range you start to see some wind advantage of the Heavier projectiles

For you, try the HBC's instead of the Noslers as they have a different ogive and hence less drag not to pricy either. At 1000yds the HBC will still be supersonic, just...but that is a 30inch barrel and 45gr 2208. The noslers and HBCs might go well in the AR10 as well, not a bad idea to use them as a baseline IMHO, they'l do better than 1/4moa if the gun will.

"whats "long range" to you? 600yds? 800yds? how long is his barrel? The 168gr seems an ideal weight for 30cal, but I know some of the long range FTR guys are going heavier still. My future plan is to build an AR10 so I'd be interested on how this goes.

I think 800m is what he is looking at, does anyone know the longest COAL you can have and still fit the rounds in an AR-10 mag? I'm assuming most brands will be the same.
