    308 Subs

Got some projectiles from @nzshooter 200gn & 151gn. Went 1/2 in a container of Trail Boss. Loaded up some of each with three different powder weights 8,9,10gn of T/B and had a play today 200’s not to good with most of them going in sideways. The 151’s on the other hand seem like they will be the goods with a bit of tinkering and a better weather day, it’s blowing like a barstard here today. Shots were a bit rushed as the only calmish place on my mates farm had nosey heifers in it and they either wanted to knock over the target or come and see what the dog and I were up to. Shots at 50 yards.

Next thing is to load up some more and have another go, running them over a chrony at the same time and maybe play with seating depths and refine powder weights.

What rifle are you using? I'm interested to know what twist you have there. There seems to be a little bit of disagreement as to what will stabilise the 200s, and what won't.

This fucking wind is driving me mental, so much I want to do with subsonic .22LR and .308, but it's 24x7 gale force at the moment, later in the summer season this year, it's usually done & dusted by New Year. Should be a nice gentle easterly flow by now.

Sako AII with an ex target barrel screwed on to it. No idea what twist and can’t be bothered finding out, it shoots well with 125gn Seirras which is what I use and thought I’d give some subs a try. I got 50 of each to try, I’m happy using the 151’s over the 200’s anyway. As for the wind it’s been two days and heavy here.

If it is a used match barrel it could have a 14" twist quite common in the days of the old 144 gr FMJ Australian ammo and projects,
that could explain the unstable 200 grain the Greenhill formula say a 13" twist for the 200 grain higher velocity should work try them at 1600+fps.

Had a bit more of a play today in this wind that just won’t bugger off. I have worked on the seating depth and couldn’t get the magnetospeed to read the subs but would read my normal load for some reason so more study on that needed. This is 8gns of Trailboss.

We're all at pretty much the same load with the 151s eh, I'm at 7.8gr. Getting pretty much the same results.

By my reckoning @Shootm, you'll be just under the sound barrier. The odd one might go over and you'll hear the crack.

Could well be 14” want them as subs so the 151’s are the way I’ll go.

I shot the 151g with 8.5g trail boss and they were under an inch @ 50m but we’re too short to feed well in the A7 so went with the 170g pointed ones and they shoot well too, don’t think they will expand as well as the hollow points tho.

The 170gr won't expand at 1000fps need to be 1500fps+ they are the same lead mix as the 151HP ok for head shots but then any bullet will do for that

Depends on your rifle I load them with 27.0 grains gives good accuracy at 100 a friend loads them with 35.0 grains
I haven't done any expansion tests with them but the lead is as soft as I can get it, The cast bullet guru's recommend a 50/50 lead wheel weight mix
for hunting with solid point bullets these are softer than that.
