    338 fed.

Looking jnto one and was thinking of running the 200 grain sst on supers and 300 grain match kings for a sub load hopefully get them to shoot to the same point or near enough, maybe? Or dreaming. Is the 300 smk going to expand at all at sub velocities?.

Probably not. There was a good article in NZHunter a while back by a guy using 338 federal with sub loads. He ended up using Lehigh subsonic projectiles. Pretty pricy, but they do expand at sub velocities.

My experience wit the 220 grain SMK in 300 BLK would suggest that it won't.

I managed to recover a few from Big Billy goats, shoulder shots and they were same shape with rifling marks. One had a deformed / skewed tip but I suspect thats because it was a through and through and hit a bank on the other side of the animal.

I had good results with cast lead with an aggressive hollow point.

For best results I would suggest forking out for Lehigh pills from @ODL.

    Cool cartridge, Good luck.

Hornady make a 200 grain FTX that might go well at slower speeds?

if this is any help . . my subsonic load was zeroed at 50yds which gave me a 100yd zero for my high speed load . . dialups using Strelok got me out to 400yds with subs before i ran out of elevation

There is a case for the 300gr smk tumbling and slicing but i found them poor killers. I drilled them to make them expand but this didnt help much. The Lehigh are the only way to go if your serious about sub sonic hunting.
Point of impact was 8" lower at 50 for the subs and an extra 8" drop every 25 past that so a range finder and a good dail up scope or ballictic reticle is a must. After the drop/range is sorted the system works very well. My super load uses the 180gr AccuBond and i highly recommend it, small japs, large reds, close or far it always performs perfectly.Name: phone pix 180.jpg

Size: 1,022.2 KB Top Lehigh sub. Bottom SMK sub.
You will need a 1-9" twist barrel to shoot subs
    Hope this helped

In my experience copper jacket projectiles and solid lead in either .338 or .30 will not expand at sub sonic velocities. However it wont matter for head and neck shots. I have tried quite a few subs from .338Mag 300/308 etc.. never tried to hollow point cast projectiles or Lehigh.

If you want expansion with subsonic velocities there is only two options, pistol projectiles, or better still purpose built sub projectiles like Lehighs
