    45/70 reloading

    Hey boys and gals.
    I'm reloading for a mates rifle 45/70.
Any suggestions on powder and bullets?
    Crimp or no crimp?

    Thanks a lot.

Shit loads of suggestions will be found with simple search. What he intends to do with it and if he is even slightly recoil sensitive are critical to correct answer.

2F or 3F black powder would work fine.
Otherwise data is in most of the reloading books

It's for shits and giggles, really. he's got a single shot Chiapa. so just what's cheap to use for reloading and readily available. I see you can use 2208 and BM2 as well.
I think he used leverevolution 325 grain before. I think lead cast bullets be cheaper?

Shits n giggles =cast and a light powder charge.black powder even more fun. If you go bottom tier loads, trapdoor level they super nice to fire. ADI website is great place to start.

2207 any of the 300gr sp pills or, the 400gr speer, load at levergun velocities find whatever is most accurate and you're away laughing. Fast handloads are significantly more emphatic than factory ammo. Ensure you use a good crimp to prevent projectile setback in the case under recoil.

@Micky Duck The trapdoor carbine load is mild but a full 70 grains of holy smoke 2f cartridge is quite snappy

If you use home rolled BP a load of fifty is still a full case, takes a fair bit of effort ,tamping to get 60 grns worth in LOL.

Sounds like a lot of fun, guys. I'll go to the gunshop and see what's available in cast bullets and black powder. The gun is 45-70 Chiappa 1874 Sharp Sporting Walnut 32". I have 2208 2206and BM2 already. So not sure what is better. Black powder or smokeless.

In 1874 smokeless wasn't even a gleam in it's father's eye if that helps your decision

Fellow forum member ' shooternz ' sells soft cast bullets on trademe. His 390gr hollow base flat nose are a winner.
I think he is almost ready to offer a 330gr Hollow point, 350gr cup point and a 360gr flat nose from his new NOE mold. I have been testing the 330gr at subsonic and they are going great.
AR2207 is the goto powder ( smokeless )

My new bullets, finally got the .458 HP mold up and running and had a name change, they are a little heavier than 330 and 350 but that depends on the
scrap lead it varies from batch to batch; they are sized .459" lubed and gas checked can handle 1800fps without issue,
    price is $16.00/25

Rinse the bore with water, hot or cold then one or 2 patches to dry then an oil mop job done, super easy with that action.
