45/70, the time has finally come!

    Hi guys,

Been a while since I have posted, but after owning a marlin 1895 45/70 for over 10 years I’m finally going to do something with it and would like some help/advice.

I have ordered some lee dies, Winchester brass, and brought some 413g cast bullets from Rob (shooternz).

I am thinking of suppressing it and going the subsonic route. I’m guessing I will need to shorten the barrel and mag tube a little if suppressing? I usually use Dan Hardy for all my suppression needs these days but am open to suggestions for this rig.

It is not going to be a serious hunting rig, more of a fun gun.

Any info or starting loads, powders etc. would be much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Rob

Should be no requirement to cut barrel or mag tube in order to suppress it, you will loose your foresight though. Trailboss works well for subsinic loads.

    Cool, thanks guys.
I’ll look at trailboss if that is the go.
Not worried about losing my front sight, I’ve got a aimpoint for it now that horse face took my AR’s.

Keep us posted on this wee project mate. I am new to 45-70 with the Marlin 1895 SBL. I love the feel of a bare lever gun with open sights but I'm having a play with a red Dot on it. The mag tube on this is almost barrel length and I'm not inclined to get it smithed for a can, as much as I would love a can on it.

Using those 413 gr loads I found 50gr of BM2 was a good medium load but I've yet to chrony it. I was advised by the previous owner that 14gr trailboss was right but unsure if that's sub. My "hard man" load is 56gr BM2 with Speer 400gr jacketed flat points.

Let us know how you get on.
