I'm after some heavy projectiles for a 45-75 iv just committed to buying
Anyone been down this road and have any experience?
Seems like a big jump from my 308 running 200gr

45-70 and casting your own go together like Lasagne and Garfield. 458s are great for paper patching too, you can patch 45LCs without having to use custom made molds or sizers.
@Maca49 know about this big arsed stuff.
Shoot 500grain pure lead projectiles with 63 grains FFG black powder, you will find a good smokeless load some where, if you FPS get up you'll need harder lead and gas checks to stop erosion of the projectile base, my projectiles are protected with cardboard wads, but using BP
Thankfully it comes with a cast for one size of projectile but I'm guessing it will be around 325gr
Iv been looking at trailboss loads to try and the seller has some data to pass on
I'm guessing paper patching is a wad wrapped around the projectile so it can be of a smaller size and still seal?
Like on a musket?
Paper patching is using onion paper carefully wrapped around the projectile, to the correct circumference to ensure even wrap and then knot by twisting at the base of the projectile, the paper is wetted first and it tightens as it drys, so it doesn't come off. Onion paper can be substituted with dress makers pattern paper, buy them from an op shop. Rember using BP no air gaps in the shell! Using smokeless use a filler to hold the powder on the primer.
That's bloody interesting
You learn something new every day
Worth looking at AR2206H for a smokeless load, you will only get a subsonic load out of Trailboss with that weight.
I'm hoping go dual purpose eventually but mainly subsonic planned for this rig
Anyone got a good lead on 500+ gr projectiles?
What sort of rifle is it seems to be a good question before we all chip in with load advice. Ive got an 1884 trapdoor that shoots 405 and 500gr lumps quite well with 60 gr of 2f black powder never been game to use smokeless in it though trailboss probably would be ok. Half the fun of it is having to ask someone else if you hit it or waiting for the smoke to clear before you can see for yourself.
it is a single shot H&R, so should handle the jandle no matter what load i feed it
Im really only interested in velocity less than 1050fps so shouldn't be pushing the limits anywho
I can melt my own projectiles if need be but I doubt the mold that comes with will be anywhere near 500gr
That guy in tokoroa is who sells me the 308 lead projectiles but he dosent list a heavy .45 slug sadly
Ill ask him if he can
Pour the lead into a coke can :D
Is it possible to get lead rod in 11.63mm and just cut it to suit? that would be extremely convienient
Try hays and associates Carterton
