Anyone been down this road and have any experience?
Seems like a big jump from my 308 running 200gr

45-70 and casting your own go together like Lasagne and Garfield. 458s are great for paper patching too, you can patch 45LCs without having to use custom made molds or sizers.
@Maca49 know about this big arsed stuff.
Shoot 500grain pure lead projectiles with 63 grains FFG black powder, you will find a good smokeless load some where, if you FPS get up you'll need harder lead and gas checks to stop erosion of the projectile base, my projectiles are protected with cardboard wads, but using BP
Thankfully it comes with a cast for one size of projectile but I'm guessing it will be around 325gr
Iv been looking at trailboss loads to try and the seller has some data to pass on
I'm guessing paper patching is a wad wrapped around the projectile so it can be of a smaller size and still seal?
Like on a musket?
Paper patching is using onion paper carefully wrapped around the projectile, to the correct circumference to ensure even wrap and then knot by twisting at the base of the projectile, the paper is wetted first and it tightens as it drys, so it doesn't come off. Onion paper can be substituted with dress makers pattern paper, buy them from an op shop. Rember using BP no air gaps in the shell! Using smokeless use a filler to hold the powder on the primer.
That's bloody interesting
You learn something new every day
Worth looking at AR2206H for a smokeless load, you will only get a subsonic load out of Trailboss with that weight.
I'm hoping go dual purpose eventually but mainly subsonic planned for this rig
Anyone got a good lead on 500+ gr projectiles?
What sort of rifle is it seems to be a good question before we all chip in with load advice. Ive got an 1884 trapdoor that shoots 405 and 500gr lumps quite well with 60 gr of 2f black powder never been game to use smokeless in it though trailboss probably would be ok. Half the fun of it is having to ask someone else if you hit it or waiting for the smoke to clear before you can see for yourself.
it is a single shot H&R, so should handle the jandle no matter what load i feed it
Im really only interested in velocity less than 1050fps so shouldn't be pushing the limits anywho
I can melt my own projectiles if need be but I doubt the mold that comes with will be anywhere near 500gr
That guy in tokoroa is who sells me the 308 lead projectiles but he dosent list a heavy .45 slug sadly
Ill ask him if he can
Pour the lead into a coke can :D
Is it possible to get lead rod in 11.63mm and just cut it to suit? that would be extremely convienient
Try hays and associates Carterton
Hi Bill999, I have a mould drops bullets at 424 grains .459" diameter I don't think the critters will notice the difference.
Robert.
Looks like hays and assosiates only go up to 230 sadly
Lead Projectiles
429 x 200 grain (44/40) $30 per 100 Buy me
454 x 250 grain (45LC) $30 per 100 Buy me
311 x 93 grain (32/20) $60 per 100 Buy me
457 x 420 grain (45/70) $30 per 100 Buy me
451 x 230 grain (45ACP or 45LC) $30 per 100 Buy me
451 x 195 grain (45ACP) $30 per 100 Buy me
45ACP and 45LC diameter are around .452, for the 45-70 you'll need somthing close to .458 etc unless you want to paper patch them up.
Attachment 30350
the bottom left is a patched 230 45 ACP, the one behind it is a .458 around the 460 grain mark.
The .457x420 they list could be worth considering.
Yea I'll settle on something in the 400 range if I can't find a good supply of 500+
I didn't imagine it would be this hard to find them, surely .45 subsonic is a road well travelled?
Anyone tried the Barnes 600gr rnsp iv found listed on the shooter app?
Well I have some great news
The bullet mould plyers that came with the rifle is for a 510gr projectile
The gun looks good and like it will be a winner
I'll have a good look over the rifle tomorro
12gr of trail boss behind these lead bullets aparently produces 800fps
Which I think will be about righthttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...5f934e3c77.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14...56f8a5aa92.jpg
Cool  would be interested to see a pic of one of your retrieved HPs to see what they perfom like.
Trailboss works good in my Marlin though the trajectory isn't exactly flat hehe.
Attachment 30402
Well my test could have gone better
Seems like it missfires more than it shoots
I'll see if it's the handloads included or a fireing pin problem
I'm keen to see what these bullets do aswell
I seem to loose most of my projectiles doing neck and head shots and getting exits
So the mould is a hollow point? wish I had one for my 3030 in the 45.70 the flat points so the lees seem to do the business ok though with big bullets I think velocity is overrated as long as you can handle the trajectory a they're not exactly flat shooting.
The mould is for a round nose projectile but he included this device he had made to slide the projectile in with a hole for a drill bit in it which you simply drill to your liking
