Thread: 6.5 120gr Sierra SPT Pro hunter vs 130gr HPBT GK

Hey guys have settled on a longer range hunting projectile but not on a bush round yet. Come down to the above projectiles. Have used the GK in the 165s and was impressed but read good things about the 120 PHs. Also anyone have some laying around they no longer use that I could buy. Regards john

No real difference, both are a cup design, non bonded.
Do the job no worries.
GK is a boat tail design, but if its a bush round, again, won't give you anything over a flat bottom.

I prefer the GKs in a number of calibres purely for ease of seating the projectiles.

Both will kill things dead. A boat tail really is unnecessary on a "short range" projectile as the ballistic advantage it adds only begins to show as speed drops towards transsonic.
Soft points seem to expand better but hollow points may have better brush busting properties.
If its a 6.5 swede, I just use the same 139 SP gr pro hunter for everything. After all why complicate things .

120's hit hard, similar bc to130 .270.. I've found the 140's can go straight-through over 400m,unless they hit a good bit of bone. Sierra prohunter are my choice. Should add 140's were Norma-spitzer bt

Yeah my LR pill is a 140gr eldm so should go pop even at distance

Pro hunters are great for bush hunting

Unsure how important this is but will be chasing mostly sika and fallow with the odd red thrown in. Heard the pro-hunters go well on sika sized animals but how do they go on reds? Down to 1 rifle so this will be what I use in the roar and just wondering how the pro-hunter would fare against a rutty stag

Either or mate, I use 120 PH's in my 260 rem. The 130 HPBT's also have a great rep overseas for flattning deer within normal hunting ranges.

Just the bees for your short tube. Pro-hunter 120gr a great all rounder, based on info by those who have used. @GWH should have some answers.
I just started loading them for a Mod7 260 in front of W748, a moderate load hitting 2800fps and it groups well. About to try on some reds & goats in a couple of weeks.

I don't have a 6.5 but from what mates keep telling me you cant go past Nosler Partitions (in 6.5 there are 125 grn partitions) for any sub-270 calibre rifle. . I mean this with all sincerity. - (Of course as everyone knows once you graduate to a 270, you then have enough power to do the job which ever bullet is selected.)

Haha owned a 270. Put a box through it and sold it. For that amount of noise and kick I was personally not impressed.

Before i went to H414 in the 260, i use to run 46.5gr of 2209 with the 120 gr pro hunter at around 2850 fps from a 20 inch barrel. Shot .5 inch at 100 pretty easy. With H414 can get very close to 3k still with good accuracy.

Edit: I have found that CCI 200 primers give better results in 260 rem than the Fed 210's do. This was a tip i got from a 260 rem target shooter old guy ;-)

I tried 120gr pro hunters but between the change in POI and the same perceived recoil I ended up using 143eld x for everything
