    6.5-284

About to start loading for a mate of mine he’s tapped out at 2689fps with 143 and 2213sc

Going to change him over to the 147 and have 2209 2217 RL23 and RL26 possibly Superformance to 24” barrel he wants to gain velocity im sure 2900-2950 isn’t out of the picture? What day you? And ideas with the above powders many thanks

What does tapped out mean - has he run out of case capacity or got pressure signs?

I haven't worked mine up yet but the ladder I shot with 2209 I got to 2890 with Berger 140s at 49.6gns and at that there were signs pressure was MAX so use caution and work up.

Another important factor is the chamber, the more modern "Norma" chamber is designed for long actions and a COL of 82mm. The older chamber will have a heck of a lot less freebore and show pressure sooner/generally produce less velocity

I’m not 100% on the chamber yet rifles not in hand I’m pretty sure its an R93 and again I don’t no if that was a full case pressure or accuracy il know more come Monday and keep my updates going as we get threw it

Slower powders probably best option, like 2217, RL23 or 26.

I have had good results with 2225 and n560 in 6.5-06 (similar capacity) if that helps you with burn rate considerations

I always thought a 6.506 would be near perfect, even set aside an action for a build - but- no one seems to get great velocity with 6.5 06 almost like it is some ballistic anomaly that doesnt work.
Is this true or have you cracked it ?

@Brian has got his humming by using lighter Barnes bullets. Good velocity and kills very well.

Get 2980fps using RL25 & Norma brass to drive 140 AMAX pills in my 6506ai. I suspect RL26 might be better but will stick with the RL25, it’s plenty quick. And save the 26 pixie dust for other rifles

I'm running 140s at 3k will play with 147s in the not too distant future to see what speed they like to fly at

Using 147's and Reloader 26 in my 6.5 at the moment. 20" barrel and getting 2860 fps out of it, if the barrel is 24" I would pick the velocities you are looking at are gettable.

Can give you the load if you want to have a look?

In my 6.5/284 Norma. Long action 700.
2209-48.5 gns-140 Berger VLD or amax/ELDm-2900 fps. Have gone up to 51.5 but a bit hard on brass.

Best accuracy is with 2217. One hole groups but at a lower velocity node 2800fps. There is likely another node further out though.

I think your mate has some issues you’ll need to sort out first. With some very rough numbers from GRT you should expect about ~2900fps with a 24” barrel, 2213sc, and the 143gr.
