    6.5 284 load info

A mate has asked me to do some load development for his 6.5 284 using the Barnes 120ttsx projectiles.

Early stages at the moment but looking for powder recommendations. I know we may be stuck with what we have as opposed to what is best suited

H4813sc or AR2213sc worked well for 130gr and 147 gr in mine for accuracy, not that quick though

I have only used heavy projectiles 140 -143grn so feedback relates to these.

I had a 30 inch barrel and 2213sc was my choice.

I had the barrel turned down from a #5 to a #3 and cut to 24inch and have moved to 2209, it’s still a tac driver.

Short answer, rocking horse shit would be the preferred powder.

    I run 50grns of 2209 pushing 143 eldx just over 2900fps

I built one some years ago probably 12-13 after reading Stags posts re his “heavy field gun”. Mines regular weight. I found his loads very hot in my rifle. 2209 at 58.5 drives a 140 VLD at 2850 from at 24 inch tube. 59.5 gives pressure signs. 2217 gives better accuracy and lower ES. In saying that 2209 is well under Moa.

Shit I better check my powder volumes, may have confused with 7-08. Defiantly 2209

That heavy field gun wore thin at 14.2lb….was really the start of custom guns. Current is about 9lb all scoped up and shoots dam near as good.

    Stag,
If my memory is good you went up to about 51.5 gns of 2209 and 53.5 gns of 2213 behind a 140 A max. I pushed up to your loads but they were too hot for me.

could be worth running some RL16 in it, I'd need to run some numbers on where to start load wise though

Running 120gr is kinda limiting the capabilities of the round. But if that’s what he wants.
My final loads for the 140gr Berger was 53.5gr Vihta N165
For the 143gr Eld was 55gr Vihta N560
I also tried Re26 and 2209 both were ok
This data won’t help mush with 120gr pills unfortunately.
Banging into QL a few figures (all related to my rifle) a Max charge of 60.5gr Re26 will give a 98.2% fill 100% burn at 3315fps
Running your AR 2217 at 62.3gr max your at a fill of 110% with a 98%burn doing 3239fps
Looks like AR 2213 would be worth a try 58.3gr max 101%fill 98% burn at 3251fps
*****All these are MAX charges with my rifles measurements*****
    Hope some of this helps.

Thanks @Noswal. He has some 2213 which I thought might be a place to start. He also has some RL22

I did bang in numbers for both Re22 and Re19 both looked to be ok but that 2213 had the closest fill/burn rates. So it’d be a good start.
I presume being that pill it’s a hunting load so you’re not looking for 0.3moa
I like to have mine at 0.5 or better but that’s only because I’m an idiot.

Ok, your post had 58.5….probably meant 48.5.

My lighter rig runs 50grn of 2209 and that’s quite hot. About to run a heap more.

Are you still running yours? Still by far my favourite caliber.
