    Which 6.5 ?

Hey guys so wanting to build a 500m (absolute max if i really had to, not interested in biased opinions) max lightweight sika rifle. Im looking at either a credmoor or .260

Does anyone have realworld experience with either and what would you choose of the two and why. It will be built on a short action 22 or 24 inch and run VLD projectiles

    Cheers !!

Go for the Creedmore in a true short action and run bullets in the 130 grain range, it is a better designed cartridge than the .260
it will fit longer bullets in the mag with out using up space in the case, If I were going to build one I would use a Sako 75 111 action
    it allows COAL of 2.90"

Seating depth for the VLDs is going to be your main cosideration. Depending on which action you chose and its internal mag length.
A 260 is gonna need some room to seat those bullets on most standard chambers, esp if you use 140gr. So some SA mags could be too short.
A 6.5 CM will give you that room due to the shorter case.
I went down the 260 path on a build but i had a Tikka & used the long mag to overcome the OAL issue.

I think you would struggle to get that?

    I am getting 2750fps out of my 20" barrelled 6.5x47Lapua with 143Eld-X & a healthy load of R17.
A mate is running a std Tikka T3 in 260 with the 143 Eld-X as well with 2209 for the same speed as me.

There is bugger all difference in speed between the 6.5x47L, 6.5 Creed & 260.

As Mathias said the 260 in a LA would insure you could get 2800 if you play around with powders & throated it accordingly.

Why do you say he would struggle to get 2800 with a 140gn bullet and a 22" barrel when you get 2750 with a 20" barrel and a 20" barrel? If you believe that each inch of barrel roughly eguates to 20fps then he is bang on the money.....

If you use Superproformance powder you will usually get over 2800fps in both .260 and 6.5 Creedmore with the 143 ELDX

@Kudu, Well I had a Creedmoor with a 20" barrel & it was slower than my 6.5x47 (Hornady brass, 2209, 143eld) if you got some Lapua brass with the small primer pocket, Pushed it hard with a fast powder like Re17, etc then you'd probably get it to 2800, whether it would be accurate there, who knows? also hornady list there factory 143eld-X load as doing 2700fps from a 24" test barrel.

I have a Creedmoor and love it. Hornady have also just launched a 6.5 PRC. It is essentially a Creedmoor on steroids, with an extra 200 fps. If you reloaded or did a bump ammo buy on that it would be great.

With the right powder that should be possible.
30deg shoulder on the Creed helps brass life and less trimming.

I've owned plenty of 6.5's, go the 260 if you are looking short action and a 22" tube is plenty.

With the right projectile and velocity either or will do what you want.

I have only shot a couple animals with my 260 improved as far as 500 but had no issues using a 130gr brick of a bullet at around 3000fps.
You don't need a high BC bullet shooting to 500. Just an accurate one.

I have had .260 and .260ai if you are building on a rem I'd go a wyatt box for the better OAL, I'm going to build another it will be a 20-22 inch and will be a 6.5 creedmoor or .260ai but the creed will be easier and feed nicer etc

A kimber Montana in 6.5 creedmoor seems a pretty easy choice for what you're after as long as it shoots....

Cheers all yip no so much need for VLD at 500m but it will help with wind? And will hit steel as far as i can for practise/fun.
Will most likely be a rem700 SA so sounds like the creed throwing 130 or 140s thatll allow for seating length and wont hinder powder capacity and will retain the energy side of things past 500m so should fit the bill nicely ?
