Hey guys I have a Tikka .260 18" suppressed DPT can.

I'm looking at making some loads for it, just curious on the 140 vs 147g ELDM - is the 147 a replacement for the 140 and if not what is the purpose of it - seems a very minimal difference to 140?

Also has anybody had any expansion issues with ELDM sub 150 - 200yards? I know the ELDX is another option but isn't the bc much lower? but may expand better up close?

Under 500 yds BC wont be an issue
ELD X's seem to be a really effecvtive killer

147gr ELD-M, Red hind, placed behind shoulder @ 200m. Recovered just under the offside skin. Left the muzzle @ 2700fps.

@Pommy nice - what barrel length and case was that 147 coming out of to get 2700fps ?

28" 6.5x47L... Ok so maybe it was 198m.

Possibly a bigger consideration.....is which of the 3 projectiles is actually reliably available and in useful quantities? That might make the decision easier.

140 and 147 are both current items. The 147 Eld-M and 143 Eld-X are near-as-dammit identical external shape (very different as far as loads go,
DO NOT try to interchange!).

As to which one you would pick is getting into hair-splitting territory.
147 Eld-M - highest BC, will protrude into case significantly at mag length. Expands and penetrates well with good placement.
140 Eld-M - shorter length takes up less space in the case if length is an issue with the longer 147. Having said this it seems (anecdotally) that driving these(Eld-Ms) too fast can be problematic for close-up shots.

143 Eld-X - have the theoretical benefit of having a tapered jacket to arrest expansion and aid penetration. I can't comment on penetration on large animals as I have a sample set of 1 - which was perfect in terms of damage done and distance travelled through the dead deer. I can say for sure that initial expansion/explodiness is very violent even on wallaby sized critters.

Again, anecdotally it seems that the Eld-M isn't quite as splatty initially but expands beautifully.

I'd be interested in trying the 147gr but the performance of the 143gr was brilliant, 2in entry hole through the shoulder and ribcage. Didn't look for an exit or the pill as it was dark.
I use the eld-m through my 7-08 and long-range they're also awesome, although a different weight than you're looking at.

I only use the 143gr ELD-X in 6.5mm. I haven’t used the ELD-M in 6.5mm, only 6mm. I’ve been alongside hunters using 6.5mm ELD-M a fair bit and I definitely would not say that the ELDX is more “splatty”. The 147gr ELD-M is also an empathetic killer.

For competition shooting the 147 bucks the wind better 800m and further. I get almost identical performance out of 140 ELD-M and 143 ELD-X, so I now just shoot the 143’s for both hunting and competition shooting. I shoot both 140 ELD-M and 143 ELD-X with exactly the same loads.

I gave up on the 147’s - my rifle hates them. But the people that can make then work seem to be quite happy with it.

Availability is similar for all three - you have to get your order(s) in early. There is always less coming in than what we hope for. Depending on how much you shoot, keep a box or two extra.

Just a question, how do these measure up against the old 140 amax?

These are 143 gr ELD X bullets recovered from deer, first is out of my 6.5 x55 taken out of my big Sambar stag, retained weight 89 grs , range 40 yards speed about 2700 fps. Second is out of a big red stag ( over 100 kg gutted) at 528 yards out of brother-in laws 260 Rem. Last is out of a Rusa Stag ( 80 kg) at about 120 yards , 260 Rem at about 2770 fps.
At the modest speeds of the 260 , 6.5 Swede etc the 143 gr ELD X appears to perform very well and seems to hold together well.
In the magnum calibers we have had ELD X bullets separate but in saying that they have done there job well.

Never tried the 147s and seen the 143 fail badly but also have others like Flyblown who swear by them. I also like shorter barrels so the 140eldms are ideal as at lesser speeds cope well up close without blowups but more than capable at range. 2x 18" 260s later and I wouldn't bother running another ballistic tip besides the 140eldm. Used them on reds, rusa and fallow in 6.5 with great success
