The A-Tip is a target bullet though isn't it ?? high BC and all the rest of the flash retained energy numbers after it's name won't make it work as well as the archaic 270 on game right ?

Yea it is a target bullet.

The 130gn vld hunting is well its in the title a hunting bullet 0.562 only 7 down on the 150 and 20gns lighter . The 156 EOL from berger would be the closet comparison for weight and boasts a good 110 more bc 0.679 the same projectile in .270 but in 170gn sees 0.662 point being the 6.5s have their advantages power to weight . Im unsure how quick the .270 would get the 170s going but im hoping to get 2950-3000 from the 156 i think its achievable will do a report when the time comes

    Google the A-Tip & Hunting

Not all target bullets make bad hunting bullets

The Amax is a Target bullet too, no one ever used them here for hunting Aye ?????

The Scenar is a target bullet & I would never recommend it for hunting, same goes for the SMK especially the newer pointed ones

In the older Hornady reloading manuals, all A-Max bullets greater than .264” are listed as a target, varmint and “thin skinned” medium game bullet. The .264” versions are regarded as target and varmint bullets only, though I doubt a fallow deer is going to run away after being shot with a 6.5mm 120gr A-Max at 3,000fps. Hornady describes the .30 cal A-Max as “excellent for hunting thin skinned game”.

Hornady changed their minds around the 9th or 10th edition, just before they introduced the ELD-X / ELD-M, when they sought to separate the two applications. Which didn’t necessarily work... I haven’t got a new manual here and can’t remember exactly what they say about the ELD-M application, but I don’t think it mentions hunting.

It’s always interested me that the 175gr Sierra MatchKing was (is?) used in US Milspec sniper ammunition for .308” (M118LR). Supposedly the tiny opening in the tip didn’t qualify as a hollow point and as such was “non expanding”. Numerous field reports then described enemy targets having dirty great big exit holes.

I once had the misfortune to realise I had packed the wrong ammo box on a pig hunting trip in NT. Opened it up, shit I’ve got the old SMKs. Didn’t make the blindest bit of difference... very dead pigs.

That said I don’t much like the Tipped MatchKings for hunting. Those that I’ve seen used on smaller deer have been far too messy at closer ranges. Probably good as long range bullets.

    Sorry for the off-topic diversion.

Manufactures are always going to introduce new and "improved" versions of cartridges and projectiles. They are not going to make as much money trying to sell the same old thing year after year (even if it works fine) when someone else has bought out something new. Incremental improvements in products are great and some people enjoy debating the pros and cons of one product over another. You can go to Bunnings and buy a hammer for $10 or one for $100. Both will still wack a nail in but you can argue that the $100 one does it "better".
Personally I think the 6.5PRC sounds like a great cartridge for NZ hunting and if I didn't already have a similar big game rifle I would seriously look at getting one. Will I sell my 7mmRM to get one? No. I don't think so. The "improvements" would not be significant enough for me to notice any difference in the field.

My main hunting bullet is a target bullet(eldm). Have shot a few animals with it and it has smashed all of them from yearings to big red spikers and fallow bucks. Bc of 0.640 as well from hornadys website

Why not just run the comparison with the same bullet ? At 3000 fps + bonded type bullets are better for covering shots at all ranges than target bullets. I looked up the retained velocity and trajectory numbers for the Saum with bullets leaving home at 3200 + and was very impressed.

Is this thread really going over these old questions again!? Do deer die if shot with an amax? Is the 270 really that shit? Very 2010.

Have a look at another thread then.
You will also find repeats in the "forum name" thread, and the "guns you wish you never sold thread". Guess these things just keep coming up.

No not yet, hopefully I will be comparing the 156 EH with the 153 A-Tip once I get a permit & this lock down stuff is sorted

Have a look on the US Forums great reviews for the 156 & 147s, just bare in mind our animals are much smaller & generally like a softer projectile

Also reading Terminal Ballistic Studies research berger is not regarded as the best choice. Apparently the 147eldm is good, but not good say under 200 and you should use the 143eldx
Be interested iin wat Kiwi Greg finds out. Cant get my hands on any of the 156 at the moment to test
